Who In South South Politics Should We Rally Around? by CplusJason: 2:33pm On Oct 09, 2016
When PDP heavyweights like Femi Fani Kayode and Governor Ayo Fayose rise in defense of APC leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, all in the collective interest of South West politics, some questions cannot but come to mind. Who in South South politics should we rally around when, as it is becoming increasingly evident, the outlines of party divide begin to blur? Or is it a case of 'to your tents O Israel'?

GEJ. At least he is a former president!!

This is actually the real fear of the Fulanis in the North. That the SS that owns the Oil should never have a great unifying leading politician.

South South is not mono-ethnic like the SW. Every ethnic groups with their own interest, and alliance is built across board when it comes to federal politics.

Apart from being former President, GEJ cant be said to be IJAW political leader not to talk of the entire SS.

This is because as a person, GEJ doesn't pull political weight and does not specifically promote Ijaw or SS interest.

In South South, ethnic groups through their Unions are leaders of their respective groups. INC for Ijaw, UPU for Urhobo, ILT for Itsekiri etc.

For SS interest, all groups come together.

Jonathan is a unifying factor for a majority of South South/ South East Peoples. Jonathan is more likely to sway opinion in Anambra state than say Ngige. So it's not a Matter of tribe. It's about ideals.
Most people don't care jack about ethnic leadership especially down south. That's why beyond traditional rulers, most tribes of the South South including Ibos of the South East don't have a specific leader from their tribe.

Not really. Most groups of the South South are basically intertwined culturally and most share similar interests.

Jonathan is the ONLY politician that seems to have across-the-board appeal in both the SouthSouth and SouthEast. Even Igbo people worship him till today, afterall Peter Obi said he gave them an 'identity'. cheesy

I was speaking to my father recently and he actually said the same thing that poster here wrote.

Jonathan might be the only guy that everybody in Nigeria can accept. We've already seen "the worst" he can do. We know his worst is better than a lot of other people's bests.
Outside of the intense propaganda of the last two years of his term, I think people liked him. He never favoured his ethnic group nor the East at large as projects he undertook can show. He's also been shown to be a fundamentally good person, with a heart and a conscience which is more than can be said for just about every Nigerian politician.

I'm rooting for Sullivan Chime tho. We need a calm president from a calm state grin

In the SS, we don't breed monsters. We don't need it. It is counter productive. We are not human worshipers.

Every leader has his time. He does his own and gives way for others. What should bind us should be developmental interest.

We don't need any asiwaju-like personality that will be blocking people's growth. No body should suppress others destiny.

Greed and selfish interest will not allow them, but I see Peter Odili and James Ibori as the pillars of South South politics. Wike is another one to watch out for.

You are wrong, you should have said that South West is not as greedy and selfish as South South. There are several ethnic groups in the South West. Ijebus are different from Ekiti. Owus are different from Egbas. Aworis are different from the Akokos. Yet we don't fight tooth and nail like South South miscreants.

Is Anambra in SS?

In the SS there is no rallying figure.

Jonathan, an Ijawman CANNOT go to Edo state to sway votes, Oba of Benin hold that nod.

Jonathan CANNOT go to Urhoboland to command leadership, James Ibori calls the shots as Urhobo political leader.

Jonathan cannot go to Ibibioland, Sen Akpabio calls the shot there.

In South south the clamour/power of ethnic leadership is exercised by their various unions/groups. The Urhobo Progressive Union usually decide the political direction of Urhobo nation while James Ibori is seen as a man after their heart.

The Ijaw National Congress decide the political direction of Ijaw nation, while political leaders act in consonance.

If there is a political stalemate in Ikwerreland, they have their mechanism. An Ijawman cannot determine for them.

The point is that Tinubu is seen as the rallying point for Yoruba because he is seen as a Nationalist that is concerned with Yoruba interest especially. If Afenifere was strong, Afenifere would have played the role like it was pre-2003.

There is NO political leader in South south but what can be achieved is political alliance. South south is not Mono-ethnic like SW.

which Odili? that one? He can't even be the political leader of Upland Rivers not to talk of SS.

Ibori is leader in Urhoboland(maybe Delta state). He cant go beyond that.

Due to the multi ethnic settlement of the south south..we can hardly rally around anyperson..jonathan would have been an option, but for the usual sentiments..wont fly.

Our people too no go help situation because everybody for our place wan make e be the main man.

Guess we should make use of our local groups or organisation..INC UPU..and others.reach a consensus on whatever we tend to achieve.
Then create a bigger umbrella for it..like the IZON nation..this will accommodate all south south interest group.

Because is much more easier for tompolo to be president..than for south south to rally under a person grin

You seem to underestimate the relevance of the aforementioned, Bro, I know you just said that because of your love for Goodluck, I also love him as well, but if by chance the SS unite like the SW to appoint a political leader, (Ibori and Odili) One of them will be appointed. They have paid their dues Bro.

there is a ancient saying.."Igbo enweghi eze" meaning 'Igbos have no king'..the Igbo man doesn't believe that another man should have a say in how he charts the course of his life..that is why only very few men have been able to rally the Igbo nation to a single cause..ojukwu, nnamdi kalu and maybe Jonathan...like you said, it is not about tribe, but ideals..

Suddenly what we now see on social media is the SE don't have a respected leader, the SS don't have anyone to rally around, bla bla bla all because Tinubu abi na tinubu has been humiliated. I thought the SW said they don't need the rest of the south besides why should the whole south unite just to save tinubus political career especially when we all know he is selfish and greedy just like every other politician.

Nigerians will never cease to to amaze me, tomorrow one slowpoke will come and shout God bless nigeria, how will God bless you when you chose to have a thief as a mentor and political leader.
Nigeria is dead and will be buried very soon. Nonsense

Lols you are funny. SS can't "unite" like SW because SW is monoethnic unlike SS that that multiethnic. However, SS can ALIGN to pursue a course.

Like in every coming together, each group is represented and nobody from any group assumes sole leadership like it is obtained in monoethnic region like SW.

In Delta state, neither the Ijaws nor the Itsekiri see Ibori as their political leader. He's restricted to his Urhobo. Peter Odili in Rivers can't cross beyond his Ndoni(If they even consider him). Maybe, he's the leader of SS cultists LOLs

OP, Akpabio is the man you seek. He should be the new face of Southsouth politics. He is a consummate politician, an achiever par excellence, and a bridge builder. The way he became the Minority Leader in the red chamber is sheer political wizardry.

Put him on the same ticket with Atiku and watch Nigerians troop to the polls.

I agree with most of your submission but as per Itsekiris not seeing Ibori as political leader, you are kind of wrong. Remember that Ibori singlehandedly installed Uduaghan (an Itsekiri) as Governor. Installing someone as governor no be small matter o. Obviously he was able to achieve that due to considerable influence he has within that ethnicity.
