* 6 MUST TIPS FOR GROWING TOMATOES*

1. SUNLIGHT.

Tomatoes require a minimum of 8 hours of continuous sunlight each day.

2. TEMPERATURE .

Tomatoes need 3 to 4 months of warm, clear, fairly dry weather to produce best. Tomatoes need consistent night temperatures between 55°F and 75°F to set fruit. (A few varieties will set fruit at lower or higher temperatures.) Fruit will not color properly when night temperatures stay above 85°F, and plants will quit growing when temperatures go above 95°F.

3. CONTINUOUS AND EVEN WATERING.

Keep the soil evenly moist–not too wet and not too dry. Too much water will drown the plant; too little water will stop fruit production. Test soil moisture by sticking your finger into the soil–if it comes out dry, it’s time to water; if it comes out wet, hold off. During periods of drought deep water tomatoes once a week. A constant, even supply of water can prevent blossom end rot, but too much water will cause it.

4. CONTINUOUS FEEDING (NUTRIENTS)

Tomatoes are high feeders. Prepare the tomato-growing bed with well-rotted garden compost and a trowelful of aged manure added to the soil ahead of time ; where each plant will grow. Add a trowelful of bone meal into the bottom of each hole–the extra phosphorus will speed ripening. Too much nitrogen will give you abundant foliage but delay ripening. Add nitrogen when the top leaves turn yellow and the stem become deep purple.

5.USE LOOSE, WELL-DRAINED SOIL.

But almost any garden soil will grow tomatoes. Sandy loam is best for early tomatoes. Heavy clay loam is ideal for late tomatoes. Amend the soil with aged compost before planting at least two weeks to transplant after nursery . Tomatoes prefer a soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, just below neutral in acidity.

6. PROTECT LEAVES AND ROOTS.

Protect the tomato plant from extremes of temperature–cold and hot, strong winds, weeds, pests and diseases. Transplant 6 to 8 weeks old tomato seedlings in the garden/field . If transplanted sooner, tomatoes must be protected from cold temperatures with hot caps or plastic tunnels. Place tomatoes in the garden/field where they will be protected from drying winds. . Examine plants often to get rid of tomato hornworms and other pest early. Avoid fungal and bacterial diseases by watering at the base of plants and rotating tomatoes to new beds each year. Where summer temperatures exceed 95°F, shade cloth protection will protect leaves and fruit.

*MAKING A CHOICE OF TOMATO VARIETY FOR PLANTING*



There are hundreds of tomato varieties available as seed in the market today and choosing a few for your home garden or field can be a daunting task. Here are a few things to consider:

1. Decide on the type of tomatoes you want to plant base on personal need or market need ; for example, cherry tomatoes, Tomatoes for making paste (Beef)

2. Consider the size of the mature plants.
Determinate tomatoes grow to about 3 feet tall and are the best choice for containers or open field cultivation. Indeterminate tomatoes get very large, up to 6 feet tall. (All tomatoes benefit from support.

3. Look for disease-resistance tomato Varieties which we also deal in (SEEDWORLD LTD) Tomatoes are susceptible to a number of diseases that may or may not be a problem in your region. To be on the safe side, always grow at least one variety with resistance to verticillium,bacteria wilt and fusarium (designated by a V or F after the variety name).

*STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE FOR STARTING YOUR NURSERY SEEDS USING TAKE AWAY CONTAINERS OR SEED TRAYS AS SHOW IN THE PICS BELOW *

1. Thoroughly moisten the seed-starting medium(cocopeat) or Soil (Nursery bed already prepared) with water and then fill the containers to within 1/2" of the top. Firm the grow medium but don't compact it.

2. Place two or three seeds into each small container or each cell of a seed tray . Cover the seed with about 1/4" of soil and gently firm it over the seeds but do not Compact it .

3. Water to ensure good seed-to-mix contact. You can use a perforated bottle water lid to spray them or get a mini sprayer of 2litre to spray water over the top. You don't need to soak the soil, just moisten the top layer.

4. Place the cups or trays in a warm spot or cover with a nylon to great some level of heat until they sprout out,then you remove it . At this point, the seeds don't need light.

5. Keep the mix moist but not soaking wet. If your seed-starting system has a greenhouse top, use it to help hold moisture.

6. Check grow medium daily. As soon as you see sprouts, remove the covering and place them in a light reflective sunny area ,pls note not on direct sun or under grow lights, keeping the lights just an inch or two above the top of the plants.
