– Jigawa state government continued with its women empowerment project by loaning them goats

– The women are expected to return three goats after 18 months to the government

– 200 additional women have benefited from the scheme


As part of the plan to diversify the economy and rid the state of poverty, Jigawa government provided 600 goats to 200 women.

NAN reports that Ali Safiyanu who is the Information Officer of Buji local government disclosed this on Sunday, October 16.

Under the Goat Rearing/Breeding Loan Scheme introduced by the state to empower women, the goats were given as loans to them in the 11 wards are expected to pay back in 18 months.

Binta Shuaibu who is the All Progressives Congress woman leader distributed the goats to the women.

Safiyanu said each woman was given two she-goats and one he-goat to rear and the breeds would give birth twice in one year. The women will thenpay back with three goats.

“The government decided to give the women goats because of its economic values; both the goat’s meat and its skin are needed.

“Since most of the beneficiaries are rural dwellers, to feed the animals will not be hard for them because of the availability of the animal feeds in their villages.”

He said the state had also given 20,000 improved fuel economy stoves for free to local food vendors in the local government.

“The stoves were distributed under the state government’s “Women Food Vendors Support Programme.”

The initiative introduced by Governor Muhammed Badaru Abubakar is expected to bring 18,000 women out of poverty as 47 per cent of the population are women.

Vanguard reports that the national poverty indices place the state as the poorest and women as the most vulnerable. The new goat multiplication scheme is already yielding result.

Aishatu Jibrin who was a cap-knitter and has four children benefitted from the goat farming scheme.

This ia a very good Idea. It is similar to the Bil Gates Chicken coop project. I hope the government doesn't pad the project and the women should manage it properly. It will be viable project in and all around remote villages where theft isnt an issue
