The 2017/2018 JAMB forms might start selling anytime soon. In fact, it might be out for sale anytime from next month(November).

Whining about the negatives of the new JAMB policy is not alone, it is also very important to brace prospective applicants for this new development should this law be approved by the executive.

Here are things to do that can help you secure an admission place in the coming JAMB exam.

Start Studying Now
As the old saying goes “the earlier, the better”. Whatsoever you intend doing successfully, it’s a must you start it as early as possible. This will keep you on a better pace ahead of others. This does not, however, mean reading every text books and notes you have at home; SMART reading is the key here. Study past questions, attempt questions on your own, attend extra coaching if you can afford it, create or join a study group (this increases your level of commitment), create a study plan and follow it religiously, etc.

Research well on choice of school
This is where almost all applicant gets it wrong. I bet by now every applicant should have been able to identify his/her week points, know his/her abilities and as well understand how far/well they can do in a test. This is very necessary in making the right choice when selecting a school.

Not everyone can be admitted by the likes of UI, UNN, Unilag, Unizik, Unilorin, OAU and other first generation universities. Moreover, it’s now a well-known fact that these schools always have large number of applicants that far…far exceeds their admission capacity. Why still gamble with a whole year of your time trying to secure admission in such schools when you know you’re probably of average performance. There are other quality federal/state universities scattered across other parts of Nigeria that have equally good facilities and learning environments you can apply to.

In reality, the emergence of good private universities like Covenant, Babcook and others in that regard have exposed the inadequacies of our so called big guns. They are now only leaving on past glory that majority of their present graduates cannot defend. Schools like ATBU, Usman Dan Fodio University, ESUT, IBB University Lapai, LAUTECH, EKSU, AKSU, and others can give you all you need to be a successful graduate.

Consider Private Universities
We now have private universities that have relatively cheaper fees compared to Covenant, Babcock etc. Schools like Paul University, Awka, Oduduwa University, Salem University, Madonna University etc. should also be considered. You are almost certain of automatic admission if you choose these universities as long as you meet the JAMB national cut-off.

Get Good Grades in O-Level Result
This is another serious thing to consider. First make sure you have good grades in your o-level results, as it’s well known that almost, if not all institutions now make use of o-level results to calculate their screening. It is thus very important to make sure you secure good grades in your forth-coming SSCE Internal/External examinations.

Prayer
Prayer is the last but not the least of things to do. Studying hard alone cannot make you achieve success, there are other factors that also determine success some of which at times are beyond human control. Committing your plans to God’s hands make things easier. When you have played your own part completely, then God will know he has a part to play and as far as He is concerned, he would never want to be the cause of anyone’s failure.

That’s it. Study, Research, Weigh your options and pray. It is the surest way to be an undergraduate by 2017/2018.
