Ui’s Or Oau’s Method Of Screening? by UIvents(m): 10:59pm On Oct 20, 2016 |
Though they both used the 50:50 method, they used a very different method from each other in arriving at purported 50:50. Now let’s take a close look at both methods. JAMB They both used the method of dividing the jamb score by 8 which looks okay. When it comes to the methods used by both for grading O’level, they both became diverse. O’LEVEL While UI used the common method of using the 5 relevant subjects for grading as used by most schools, OAU took it to another level. They gave the compulsory option of using 8 subjects; the 5 relevant subjects + 3 other subjects in your O’level result. This method used by OAU will favour some and leave some at a disadvantage. If I had good grades in my 5 relevants subjects but had fair or bad grades in the other subjects offered, the method will not favour me. And before you start saying i did examination malpractice for having good grades in just my 5 relevant subjects, remember i may be good at some subjects and bad at some. If I had fair grades in my 5 relevant subjects but had good grades in the other subjects offered, the method will favour me greatly. --------------- Before we go further, remember OAU graded their aspirants’ O’level thus; A1; 8 points, B2; 7 points, B3; 6 points, C4; 5 points, C5; 4 points and C6; 3 points. Then the 8 subjects will be devided by 64 then multiplied by 50; (8 subjects/64) * 50. And UI graded hers thus; A1; 6 points, B2; 5 points, B3; 4 points, C4; 3 points, C5; 2 points and C6; 1 point. Then the 5 relevant subjects will be divided by 30 then multiplied by 50; (5 subjects/30) * 50. --------------- Now let’s take a look at two students’ O’level result; Student 1 had 3 B2s and 2 B3s in his 5 relevant subjects but had 3 C4s in the other 3 subjects the school wants to use. The other, student 2 had 3 C4s and 2 B3s in his 5 relevant subjects but had 2 B2s and 1 A1 in the other three subjects the school wants to use. If both are aspiring for OAU; Student 1: 33 + 15 = 48/64 = 0.75 * 50 = 37.5. Student 2: 27 + 22 = 49/64 = 0.7656 * 50 = 38.28. From the information above, student 1 had 6 marks more than student 2 in his 5 compulsory subjects while student 2 had 7 marks more than student 1 in the other 3 subjects added. That one mark made the difference and made student 2 had 0.78 points more than student 1. If both had the same jamb score and are going for the same course, student 2 will have higher chance of getting admitted. If both are aspiring for UI; Student 1: 23/30 = 0.7667 * 50 = 38.335. Student 2: 17/30 = 0.5667 * 50 = 28.335. This is so glaring even to a blind. Just 6 marks difference in the 5 relevant subjects made a gaping 10 marks in the final score. If the two had the same jamb score and are going for the same course, it’s obvious student 1 has a better chance of getting admitted. No disputing the fact! Conclusively, one must use one’s senses always. Scrutinize and see which method favours you. If you want your jamb score to be weighed equally as your O’level grades; the true 50:50, Unilag and other schools which used their method of screening is the best to opt for. Check Unilag’s screening method https://uivents./2016/10/16/comparing-uis-method-of-screening-to-that-of-unilag-4/. If you feel you have better grades in some subjects other than your 5 relevant subjects, then OAU’s for you. Finally, if you have very good grades in your 5 relevant subjects, UI’s for you. All that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get high marks in your UTME. You should, as it will give you a better leverage of getting admitted. Which do you think is better? 5 subjects or 8 subjects? UI’s method or OAU’s? Drop a comment below. Thank you and God bless. Writer: Uivents Source: https://uivents. |

No matter the grading system of the o'level, so far it's 50:50, all is the same. |

UIvents: I must be veracious by registering by acquiescence to your analysis. Very objective and balanced. We now seem to be on the same page. More oil to your lamp bro. I seriously hope to be less busy to compare OAU and UNILAG 's methods to see the truer 50/50. UI's system is far from 50/50. Peace. |

jaymejate: Really? Then kindly test your hypothesis up there sir. Compute the aggregate of an aspirant of dentistry in OAU, UI, and UNILAG, with 290 utme, 5 C5 in relevant subjects and 3 C4 in 3 other subjects. Weigh his aggregates with each school's cut off for dentistry and judge your hypothesis. These schools all claimed to have used 50/50. Peace! |

1afrika: Peace bro. OAU's method of using 3 other subjects makes it difficult to determine if it's a true 50:50. Have a nice day. |

OAU has changed method to 6-5-4-3-2-1 go and recheck your score... Ehn.. ..and comparing this thing.. ..i don't understand.. ..teachers sef have different methods of turning 40 points for obj and theory each to 100.....some may turn obj to 20 by dividing and multiply theory by 2 to make 80. Some may add them together and divide by 80 then multiply by 100... Different school Senate with different people with different ideas.. .expect different results.... |

Hardeysolution: What i'm saying in essence is that, all schools in Nigeria are supposed to use the same method all through. This will give a candidate the privilege of choosing whichever school interests him or her. With this situation of using different method of screening, an aspirant will have to sit down and start calculating which school's method will favour him the most. This will further increase the number of candidates choosing a particular school. Lastly, i compared the methods to give aspirants an insight on which school's method will favour them the most and to choose rightly in the subsequent years. I hope i've answered your question. Thanks for stopping by. Peace! |

UIvents:next year may be different sir. In times past, schools have different styles... .so a candidate must still sit calculate.. ..thats who a student is.. .......no problem sir.. .just an opinion 1 Like |
