THE Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in collaboration with Nigeria Education Research and Development Council, NERDC has concluded plans to introduce financial education into basic and senior secondary education curricula in Nigeria.

This was disclosed during a press briefing on the sideline of a workshop by CBN and NERDC on the infusion of financial education into the basic and senior secondary education curricula, in Lagos.

Executive Secretary, NERDC, Professor Ismail Junaidu told the newsmen that “the curriculum, which is very innovative, comprises different themes namely: Money, savings, credit, insurance, deposit insurance, capital market, pension, planning and budgeting, financial landscape and entrepreneurship.

“Each theme contains different concepts, contents, activities, learning resources and evaluation guides that are sequenced and graduated for effective implementation and learning outcomes in the different lessons, classrooms and schools (for all the levels targeted.)”

According to Junaidu, the project was motivated by the need to address “consumers’ lack of knowledge and skills that would enable them understand financial concepts and manage their personal financial matters to enhance their economic wellbeing.”

Also speaking, Head of the Consumer Protection Department of the CBN, Mrs. Umma Dutse said the financial education initiative is being executed through a multi stakeholder approach as the project is taking place under the auspices of the financial systems regulators such as the CBN, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, Securities and Exchange Commission, National Pension Commission, National Insurance Commission, etc.

She said: “Financial education is not what one individual or organisation can do. The framework has taken a multi-stakeholder approach, so all hands must be on deck for us to achieve all our goals and objectives. I am happy to say that with all the commitments we have seen from all stakeholders, the NGOs, and development partners, I am very sure that at the end of the day, Nigeria is going to be a reference point once this curriculum is developed.”

She added: “This project is funded by the participating stakeholders and there is fund set aside for this project until its logical conclusion.”

On her part, a Director at NERDC, Prof. Kate Nwofo, said: “This project is going to be very beneficial. You know before now we have curriculum in Business, Accounting, Commerce etc, but we needed to improve on what we already have so that the students will have better access to information.

For instance, inside the Business Studies, we have found some deficiencies. As an entrepreneur, you need to know how to get access to credit and loans because your savings alone cannot meet all your needs, so we have developed that and we are infusing those aspects into the curriculum to make sure that an entrepreneur has enough information to be able to prepare a budget, create a business plan, source for funding and be able to manage a business without much challenges.”

Rubbish unless they wanna remove corresponding courses like biz studies

They're already pummelling university peeps with too much workload that their minds are too preoccupied to even 'think of other things'

I know it's not CBN's business, but let them also try and bring back HISTORY to our schools and remove ISLAMIC /CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS STUDIES from the curriculum.
We can't have our children believing that horses can fly and that donkeys can talk.

This is absolutely what I have been dreaming of.

This is cool so that our children will be enlightened, not looking for shortcuts to success through gambling, more especially sports betting that is about to destroy our generation.

Good idea. Never too late. The need has arisen long time ago. But then, who are its teachers? Are they going to be our theory educators or ideal financial educators? And many other questions.

One of the greatest failures of our educational system is the failure to provide financial education to students..Educators seem to think that money has some sort of quasi-religious or cutlike taint to it,believing that money is the root of evil

University is a cage that force you to sit behind a desk for four years so you’ll be qualified to sit behind another desk for forty years.

The university should be a place for learning and progressive research not copy and paste journals , it is not supposed to be a sit-in-the-classroom-and-copy-notes set up..

Most of our Universities Don have attain intellectual menopause and can't think beyond their analogue mind!

Our University system is built on testing memory not impacting effective knowledge that can be use in the real world, the students mind is construe on getting a good CGPA no matter the cost

We spend a lot of years in school learning nothing about money..The lack of financial education in our school system is cruel and evil..As most of us know we now live in the information age without financial knowledge people struggle financially, without financial knowledge people buy a personal house and car and think its an asset, without financial knowledge people don't know money is different from currency..

Nice One if truly implemented and the courses should be 70 percent practical..
