WARRI – THE Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas, NUPENG, has given the Federal Government 21 days to halt the mass sack of its members by oil majors or face mass action from the union.

A communique just issued by the Central Working Committee still meeting in Warri, Delta state, noted that over 3000 workers have been sacked by oil majors and servicing companies who are closing shops on account of the current recession.

Igwe Achese, President of NUPENG who read the communique said, “NUPENG will take all necessary action to drive home its demands if FG failed to act in 21 days. We are 100% in support against anti-corruption, but there must be respite for Nigerians.

“Right now, our members and even those in other sectors are no longer able to pay school fees for their children and even afford rents. Worse still, those being sacked now are so treated without commitment to proper terminal benefits.”

NUPENG is only being economical with the truth for blaming the downsizing on recession alone.

The incessant oil installations blow up is a major cause why companies are leaving Nigeria to safer havens.

EXXON Mobil just divested its Nigerian shares days ago, an indication of more to come.

Let the militant keep blowing, whether it's Buhari that will suffer the consequences of unemployment, time will tell.

I still don't understand why NUPENG believes they can threaten the government anyway they like.
I'm not a fan of Buhari's government but it's pretty obvious the country is going through recession.
The companies sacking them are doing so to avoid going bankrupt or save costs.
Why is it difficult for them to understand?

Provided they are not doing this for personal cash benefits as union officers are can never trusted, even the time of oshiohmole they call for strike for their personal gain and not for the masses they claim to be fighting for.

Labour union is dead in Nigeria. This is the first thing Buhari achieved immediately he came to power. That is the reason why he was able to increase fuel price from -N-87 to -N-145 and he had no resistance.

Any day NUPENG wants to go on strike, another arm of NUPENG from the north will say no any strike action. Let us wait for 21 days, the whole senerio will play out.
