Volkswagen unveiled its latest and greatest post-Dieselgate hope, the Atlas mid-size SUV, last night on the shores of Santa Monica, California. Its importance to the beleaguered automaker cannot be overstated as theaptly named SUV indeed carries the weight of Volkswagen’s hopes and burdens on its chiseled shoulders. The Atlas is a product specifically engineered for North America, and it will be built in the U.S. at Volkswagen’s still-fresh plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is sized and packaged to compete head to head with the heart of the three-row mid-size crossover market, one of the most important vehicle segments in North America today. The Atlas has a competitive engine range consisting of a turbocharged 2.0L DOHC 16v inline four producing 238 hp and a 3.6L DOHC 24v V6 with 280 hp. Both are paired to an eight-speed automatic and have front wheel drive as standard and 4MOTION all wheel drive optional.
