President Muhammadu Buhari has called on African leaders to form a strong united front to defeat terrorism and violent extremism, which is inhibiting development in Africa.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, quoted Buhari as saying this at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday while receiving Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto.

President Buhari expressed concern that the continent was still grappling with acts and effects of terrorism after a successful de-colonisation campaign.

Buhari, while acknowledging the valued cooperation between Nigeria and Kenya in the fight against terrorism, commended the East African country for the recent successes recorded in tackling terrorism in the region.

“A situation in which insecurity continues to obstruct the process of national development should not be allowed to continue”, the president told Mr Ruto, a special envoy to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

On the forthcoming election of a new leadership for the African Union Commission (AUC), Buhari said African States needed a very strong leadership that would encourage member states to refocus their resources and energy toward human and national development.

On Kenya’s request for Nigeria’s support for the candidature of Ambassador Amina Mohammed, Kenya’s Foreign Minister, who is vying for the AUC chairperson, Buhari said Nigeria would hold robust consultations with other African leaders on the need for strong and capable leadership that would respond to the current challenges facing the continent.

Earlier, Ruto had commended Buhari for his leadership, particularly on regional security and the fight against
corruption.

He said President Buhari’s efforts towards eradicating terrorism and violent extremism had emboldened the continent’s resolve to achieve lasting peace and security.

Well , he said the truth but the big question is "what has African leaders done to eradicate terrorism in the continent? . The last time i checked , All they are interested is in acquiring material things of the world and giving one excuse or the other for their incompetence...

That will be a good step to stop or curb terrorism but best moves is to start from the root cost of the problem which is the removal or expunge those terrorist inclined doctrines in Quran . Extremists and religious bigots in Islam and any other religions must be punished.

Does he not know men like him that reigned under military thug governments continued with the terror and still to today, use armed "colonial" armies to kill the people of Africa?

Africa especially sub Saharan Africa's development is being halted more by inept leadership (especially the case we have in Nigeria now) and savage neo colonialism especially in francophone countries.

what brought about terrorism.

Embellishments and people feel cheated (when no jobs / Social amenities), then you tax life out of their small income. so the idle minds then gets brain-washed thinking they are fighting for a good course.

I don't see how/why an African man that has a job/business generating money with provided social amenities by the government will decide to waste their lifes.

I disagree with PMB

even terrorist prone tribe/zone individuals goes to the West, become comfortable forgets/wonder why his people at home loves terrorism (his mind is occupied and he sees life a bit better than that)

Mr. "BLAMER", always looking for who or what to blame. The day I knew his cluelessness knows no bounds was the day he blamed past leaders for Nigeria's woes. He stupidly forgot he was part of the team before spewing the trash.
