God bless Philip Effiong's soul wherever he is today. At least, he was brave enough not to abandon the soldiers when defeat became imminent unlike a certain coward that ran away to Cote d'ivoire.

Considering that your leader Awolowo gave up without a fight right in Lagos, Yoruba land and became 'second fiddle' to a boy young enough to be his son (Gowon) I think that Ojukwu did well in comparison.

Yorubas are the only people who surrendered their land before the fight even started.

Philip Effiong is the real Civil war hero on the Biafran side. He did not run away, he stood his ground and surrendered because he knew the odds were stacked against the Biafrans.

However, Ojukwu, the initiator of the war, could not equip his army properly, he could not feed his civilians adequately yet he once boasted before the commencement of hostilities that he had the largest army in Black Africa and that the other side(Nigeria) will be shocked as to what they will get from him. Ojukwu boasted that he would fight till the last drop of his blood but when the federal forces closed in on him, he ignominiously ran away to Abidjan after commandeering a plane that was meant to airlift sick Biafran children, abandoning the civilians he swore to protect.

Alhaji Shehu Shagari later granted Ojukwu amnesty in 1982 after twelve years in exile. In 1983 Ojukwu contested in the Senatorial election, he also contested in the 2003 and 2007 Presidential elections but lost woefully on all occassions.

It is highly preposterous that a man who led a war against Nigeria, came back to Nigeria and participated in elections in the same country he fought against

“And I would like therefore to take this opportunity to say
that: I, Major-General Phillip Effiong, Officer of Peace
Administering the Government of the Republic of Biafra, now
wish to make the following declaration:

That we affirm we are loyal Nigerian citizens and accept the
authority of the Federal Military Government of Nigeria.
That we accept the existing administrative and political
structure of the Federation of Nigeria.

That any future constitutional arrangement will be worked
out by representatives of the people of Nigeria.
That the Republic of Biafra hereby ceases to exist.”- Phillip
Effiong, former Biafran General, handing over in 1970.

What connection have the Yoruba's and Awolowo got with Biafra? Why dont you tell us about Nnamdi Azikiwe, the man who composed the Biafran National Anthem but who eventually ran away from Biafra during the heat of the Civil war to support the Nigerian governemnt in the killing of his own Biafran people

No that is not all. There is more to the story: Nnamdi Azikiwe was the one that composed the Biafran National anthem but he ran away from Biafra. Ojukwu was the one that declared Biafra but he also ran away from Biafra. All the Biafran leaders all ran away from Biafra after sending 3million civilians to the slaughter slab.

Of particular interest is Ojukwu, the Head-of-State of Biafra. While Biafran children were dieing of Kwarshiorkor and starvation, Ojukwu's own children were feeding fat and looking healthy. Ojukwu was never at the war front. He was hiding from one under ground bunker to another throughout the duration of the war.

When Enugu the capital of Biafra fell, Ojukwu ran away to Umuhia. When Umuhia fell, he ran deeper into the Biafra heartland. He was running all through the war until he eventually ran away to Abidjan. It is rumoured that while he was on exile in Ivory Coast, he lived comfortably in a sea side masion, eating the choicest delicacies and dancing Makossa daily with Abidjan girls

,,,,LOL,,,,, LOL,,,. Miss Ojukwu went for the "Miss Ivory coast" contests.,,,LOL,,, while Effiong stood as a brave man. That's the the definition of a true hero. you could imagine had Effiong also fled, what would have been the fate of another 7 million.
The truth has spoken!

Naturally, Ojukwu who was public enemy no 1 could not have handed over the way Philip Effiong did. Nobody was chasing after Philip Effiong. Ojukwu leaving paved the way for a peaceful end to the war.

However, Ojukwu, the initiator of the war, who once boasted that he wiould fight till the last drop of his blood eventually ran away to Abidjan after commndeering a plane that was meant to airlift sick Biafran children

Ojukwu did not initiate any war, Gowon did. It was Gowon that came down to the East to fight. It was Gowon who broke the Aburi agreement he signed with Ojukwu and that caused all the trouble.

Alhaji Shehu Shagari granted Ojukwu amnesty in 1982. In 1983 Ojukwu contested in the Senatorial election, he also contested in the 2003 and 2007 Presidential elections. He lost woefully on all occassions.

You people are strange. When Ojukwu was for Biafra, you people hated him. When he now returned from exile and was for 'one Nigeria', joined politics to play his constitutional right to vote and be voted for, you people still are against him. What is it you people?

Doesnt matter what elections Ojukwu won or lost, nobody can replace him in the hearts of his people and thats what matters

Gowon initially ordered a Police Action to crush Ojukwu's declaration of secession. A full blown war later came into effect after Ojukwu's ragtag army invaded and annexed the midewest, a region that had ealier proclaimed neutrality. Ojukwu sent 3million ibos to the slaughter slab, only for him to run away, and then he came back much later to contest in an election in the same country he led the ibos to fight against. What a coward he was !!

Go and read Nigerian history well before coming online to show your ignorance. The whole trouble started when Gowon broke the agreement he signed in Ghana with Ojukwu. What kind of 'police action' requires 3 Divisions of the Nigerian Army? Long before Ojukwu invaded the mid west, the Nigerian Army was already bombing parts of Nsukka and Ogoja. The war was already on before Ojukwu got into the mid west.

The 3 million people you are talking about were killed by Nigeria just because the people said they dont want 'one Nigeria' any more. Ojukwu fought a war to liberate his from Northern controlled Nigeria. There is no shame in anyone fighting for their freedom, even at the cost of millions of lives. The allied forces kost nearly 40 million people in the second world war to get freedom in Europe.

Ojukwu was a freedom fighter who fought the combined military might of Britain, Russia, Nigeria and Egypt and held firm for 3 years. When the end was near and the center coukd no longer hold, he exited. If you were waiting for him to stay back and get himself captured and killed in other to prove he is brave, keep waiting. Ojukwu would have been a fool to let this happen.

Ojukwu fough and lost. When you cant beat them, you join them and thats what he did by returning to join politics.

There can never be any shame on Ojukwus part for fighting for the freedom of his people.

You are the ignorant one here. Ojukwu's Biafra had nothing to do with self determination, it was a territorial annexation exercise. Colonel David Ejoor, the military administrator of the midwest proclaimed that the midwest would take no part in the fighting, it was to be neutral, a buffer state. The Federal government accepted this situation and concentrated its fighting force - The 1st division on the only frontier over which it could attack Biafra, namely the border which separated the Eastern region from the Benue Province of the Northern Region.

Ojukwu on his own part did not respect the midwest neutrality. He invaded the midwest, forcefully appointed Major Albert Okonkwo, an ibo man as the administrator of the region, and then ordered his Biafran Liberation Army to march to Lagos and Ibadan

Ojukwu didn't invade the midwest- an erstwhile neutral region rather he "liberated the area foisting his own man on the people before proceeding to the Western region to "liberate" them, too.

None of theses region asked ojukwu to liberate them . Meanwhile, Ojukwu claimed his sole aim was to seek freedom for his people but ended up occupying neighbouring regions.

For those saying Ojukwu fought and lost,

1. The ONLY Biafran offensive throughout the war consisted of more than 5,000 Biafran Soldiers was led by Yoruba man named Col. Victor Banjo.

2. The Biafran offensive of more than 5,000 soldiers was stopped at Ore by 179 Yoruba Soldiers led by Colonel Oyinlade Iluyomade.

3. The 3rd Marine Commando, that eventually spearheaded the end of the three-year war in January 1970, was led by another Yoruba man named Benjamin Adekunle.

4. After Ojukwu ran away to Abidjan dresses like an aunty, the Biafran army surrendered to another man named Olusegun Obasanjo.

Let no one distort history, while none of Ojukwu's children or relations died of starvation during the war, Millions of Biafran children died of kwashiokor and other malnutrition-related diseases. When food supplies were dropped by airplanes, instead of distributing the food to the hungry Biafrans, Ojukwu and his soldiers sold these food to those who could afford it.

When the relief agencies dropped used clothing for the Biafran population, these same Biafran Soldiers seized and sold these clothes to those who could afford them.

The true heroes of Biafra are men like Banjo, Men like Effiong, Biafran men who fought with just a rifle and two bullets and not opportunistic and cowardly turncoats like Ojukwu who led his soldiers into slaughter and ran away only to came back to collect pension from the Nigerian Government.
