There is a bright light at the end of the tunnel for African women in their ongoing struggle against gender discrimination. Many of them have risen to amiable heights in their chosen careers. They have been a source of inspiration for African women. The following profiles of the top 11 of them will most certainly boost the morale of African women. They should be able to stand tall while relating with not only African men but also, other women worldwide.
11. Nicky Newton-King

Nicky, who had three law degrees, was the first woman to lead the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in its 124-year history. For seven years before stepping into the top spot, she was the deputy CEO of the JSE. She is a great example to African women.

10. Dora Nkem Akunyili

The late Professor Dora Akunyili, a Nigerian administrator and a pharmacist, was recognised globally for her deeds in the areas of public health, human rights and pharmacology. As a Director-General of the Nigerian food and drug agency, that is, National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), she put saboteurs on the run. She was later appointed as the Minister of Information and Communications in Nigeria between 2008 and 2010, the position from which she voluntarily resigned because of her dissatisfaction with what she considered ineptitude of that government as a whole. Her hard work and thoroughness were a source of inspiration to many Africans.

9. Dambisa Moyo

Dambisa Moyo is a Zambian-born author and international economist who had post-graduate degrees from both Harvard University and Oxford University. She is serving on the boards of Barclays Bank, SABMiller, the financial services group, and the global miner, Barrick Gold. She is an accomplished economist and is a pride of Zambia as well as a source of Inspiration to Africans.

8. Helen Folashade Adu

Folashade Adu, popularly known as Shade Adu, is an English singer born in Nigeria in 1959. She was awarded an OBE for her services to the music industry and according to her, the award was a great gesture extended to her and every black lady in England.

7. Lupita Amondi Nyong'o

Born in the year 1983, this Mexican-Kenyan actress got her Bachelor's degree in Film and Theater Studies from Hampshire College in the United States and bagged her Master’s degree in Acting at Yale School of Drama. At 33, Lupita is already a well-respected ambassador of Africa and has remained true to her root and colour.

6. Mimi Alemayehou

Ethiopian-born and Kenyan-raised Mimi is a development finance executive who was appointed by George Bush as an Executive Director on the board of the African Development Bank. She was also appointed as Executive Vice President of Overseas Private Investment Corporation by President Obama. During her tenure, OPIC's portfolio increased by 24%. She is current an Executive Adviser for Blackstone Africa Infrastructure L.P and has proven to the whole world that Africa is more than just foreign aids.

5. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a highly-respected economist and an influential global leader of Nigerian descent who graduated from the Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She served as a minister in the government of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan from 2011 to 2015. As the Minister of Finance and Supervising Minister for Economy, she was instrumental to how Nigeria obtained her sovereign credit rating from Fitch and Standard & Poor's. As one of the most respected economists in the world and one of the few Africans who had reached the top of their career with the World Bank, Africa is proud of her.

4. Folorunsho Alakija

She is a business woman who is also into oil and gas, fashion and printing. Folorunsho is the second richest woman in Africa, going by Forbes’ ranking. Her net worth is $2.1 billion as at the last check. She started her career as a secretary at a bank and later set up Supreme Stitches after studying fashion design in England. She must have been very industrious as a fashion designer to be a billionaire. It also required initiatives and intuition to be considered an inspiration to African women.

3. Isabel dos Santos

Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of a former Angolan President, is an Angolan investor born in 1973. She was considered the richest woman in the whole of Africa by Forbes in the year 2013. Isabel started her first business, which was a beach club when she was 24 and now own stocks in various industries and firms like Galp Energia (oil and gas firm), Unitel (mobile telecom network), and Banko BPI (Angolan bank), just to mention a few.

2. Linda Ifeoma Ikeji

Linda Ikeji is an infotainment blogger, a writer, an entrepreneur and a philanthropist who is popular home and abroad. She was born in September 1980 into a humble family. She could be said to be one of many Nigerians who had to struggle through life because of financial instability of her family. Her love for writing manifested at a tender age of 10 and she has been supporting herself and her family since she was 17. After her secondary school education, she did all kinds of part time jobs in order to fend for herself. Through all that, she was able to navigate across the University of Lagos and came out with a degree in the English Language. After her university, she ventured into journalism and started as a blogger in 2016. She is a self-made millionaire who was diligent, determined, consistent and self-confident. Her life course is an inspiration to young ladies struggling to succeed in life.

1. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Born in the year 1977, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian novelist, a non-fiction writer and short story writer. She was described as "the most prominent" in a “procession of critically acclaimed young Anglophone authors.” In order words, she has attracted new readers to African literature. She came to the limelight when Purple Hibiscus, her first novel, was shortlisted in 2014 for the Orange Prize award and has since then received numerous awards for her literary works.
