Corruption: The Bane Of Our Society by Sinkills: 1:01pm On Nov 22, 2016
Corruption is defined by the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary as the willingness to use one's power to do dishonest or illegal things in return for money or to get an advantage. Therefore being corrupt is not limited to or defined only in terms of financial gratification. It includes the use of one's power or authority for undue personal gain or advantage. Corruption is a global malaise. During the recent American presidential elections, we heard and read so much about the corrupt establishments. In the case of Nigeria's 2015 elections, corruption was a big issue. A particular political party and its candidate played on the frustration of Nigerians towards corruption. Their presidential candidate vigorously promised to fight this cankerworm headlong and totally, without fear or favour. A lot of people believed him as a man of integrity who will be true to his words. He won the election and emerged as president. By the time he assumed power, he came hard on corruption. However, instead of the fight being total, he appears to be selective about it. His focus has been on those who served in, supported or still support the immediate past administration. The president's supporters have since jumped to his defence. They claim that he cannot bite the hands that fed him (his sponsors, cronies and supporters). They support him being elective about it so long as the people he is fighting are corrupt. They also opine that when the opposition get to power, (if they survive the onslaught), they can then probe those who appear now to be above the law. But I am really concerned about the implications of this biased or sectional fight. One, it does not descourage people from being corrupt. No, it only means once you support the president, join his political party or do his bidding, you have an insurance cover to loot and enjoy your loots. Little wonder a lot of politicians have been joining the ruling party. Two, it means our president changes with circumstances and may not be a man of integrity as touted. Three, it indicates that our president is not for all but for his surrogates, allies and cronies. Four, it sets a bad precedent whereby a future leader will have the tendency to use his real or perceived enemies as scape-goats to score political point while protecting his supporters. Nigeria's economy is in a mess. There is recession and people are suffering. The primary responsibility if leadership is the welfare of the people. We want more of governance and less of politics. We need a leader who will totally fight this menace of corruption without sentiments or partiality, recover our funds looted over the decades and use them to revive our ailing economy that is in recession. This will help to improve our living standards. May God make our president such or get us our messiah I J N, Amen.

We the followers who are bearing the brunt of the economic realities should please eschew tribalism, partisanship or the desire for bragging rights. We should put pressure on whosoever is in charge to do the right thing for our overall good. God bless you all.

We must kill corruption so as to descourage embezzlement of public funds and also recover our looted funds for economic revival.
