INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT

In general, iq is an assessment of your ability to THINK and REASON.

However, your score on an iq test, will give you a pretty accurate indication of the ability you possess to:

* Think

* Reason

* Solve problems,

Which can often be critical in many phases of your life.

..................................................................................................................

The study i posted in the part 1 of this thread defined intelligence as:

"the ‘ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly, and learn from experience’.

..................................................................................................................

All the theists that commented on the thread, did overwhelmingly authenticated the validity of the study.

None of the theists ever thought that the only way, to disprove the study, was to bring forth debate or arguments, that are based on critical thinking and reasons. Better still, they could bring forth studies that disprove this particular study been referenced.

Rather, they went down the path of infantile emotions, pettiness, court jesting and illusionary gloating.

I spared them the space, so they could give a robust display of their intelligence level. And true to their limited capacity, the level of their displayed intelligence, agreed perfectly with the findings of the study.

NL theists are good sample of religious folks, when testing the validity of studies, on the inherent basis for defining religion as irrational and idiotic idea.

Atheists 'have higher IQs': Their intelligence 'makes them more likely to dismiss religion as irrational and unscientific'
*Research found those with higher IQs more likely to dismiss religion
*Another drawback to being religious, or at least Christian is losing out on top jobs
By Daniel Bates
Atheists tend to be more intelligent than religious people, according to a US study.
Researchers found that those with high IQs had greater self-control and were able to do more for themselves - so did not need the benefits that religion provides.
They also have better self esteem and built more supportive relationships, the study authors said.
New evidence: A study has concluded that religious people are less intelligent than non-believers
The conclusions were the result of a review of 63 scientific studies about religion and intelligence dating between 1928 and last year.
The conclusions were the result of a review of 63 scientific studies about religion and intelligence dating between 1928 and last year.
In 53 of these there was a ‘reliable negative relation between intelligence and religiosity’. In just 10 was that relationship positive.
Even among children, the more intelligent a child was the more probable it was that they would shun the church.
In old age the same trend persisted as well, the research showed.
The University of Rochester psychologists behind the study defined religion as involvement in some or all parts of a belief.
They defined intelligence as the ‘ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly, and learn from experience’.
In their conclusions, they said: ‘Most extant explanations (of a negative relation) share one central theme - the premise that religious beliefs are irrational, not anchored in science, not testable and, therefore, unappealing to intelligent people who ‘know better’.
‘Intelligent people typically spend more time in school - a form of self-regulation that may yield long-term benefits.
‘More intelligent people getting higher level jobs and better employment and higher salary may lead to higher self-esteem, and encourage personal control beliefs.’
Study co-author Jordan Silberman, a graduate student of neuroeconomics at the University of Rochester, said: ‘Intelligence may lead to greater self-control ability, self-esteem, perceived control over life events, and supportive relationships, obviating some of the benefits that religion sometimes provides.’
The research analysed 63 surveys comparing intelligence levels and religious beliefs between 1928 and 2012
Research from the UK last week showed another drawback to being religious, or at least Christian - you lose out in the race for top jobs.
Official figures show nearly one in four people who have no religious belief now live in homes headed by someone with a senior executive job or a place in one of the professions.
But well under a fifth of Christians are employed in the best-paid and most influential jobs or are married to someone who is, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The last census, carried out in March 2011, showed a fall in the number of people that call themselves Christian in the UK.
Christian numbers in England and Wales, including children, fell by 4.1 million in a decade to 33.2 million.
However there was a 45 per cent rise over the same 10 years in numbers who say they have no religion, to 14.1 million.

There is a difference between conducting a scientifically sound research and giving it a non-biased interpretation. It's absurd anyone links religious belief to IQ and then try to make it look like it's a cause for lower employment status.

By the way, what research shows now is that emotional intelligence (simply put: ability to efgectively work in and with a team) is the real predictive factor for career success not intelligence quotient.

No, atheists don't have higher Iqs than theists, neither are they more intelligent than theists. That's a very foolish and simplistic thing to say.

Atheists don't also know how to think more critically or solve problems better than theists. The distinction however, is that religious belief prevents theists from utilizing the full bandwith of their intellectual capabilities when examining and accessing the contents of their beliefs.

Theists can effectively employ critical thinking and impressive problem solving skills in every other area of their lives, even in the context of appraising other religious beliefs. For instance, christians can critically examine the doctrines of Islamic beliefs and point out the factual errors and absurdities, but when it comes to critically examining their own beliefs, their brain goes blank.

Most atheists were christians before they became atheists, and were devout adherents of their faith. Would you say they had lower Iqs then? I know atheists that are as dumb as a rock, and I know theists that are smarter than I am.

The problem isn't Iqs. The problem is the power of belief, and we all respond differently to it.

Intelligent comment but let's take it a step further by positing that people with higher IQs are more likely to question their beliefs and therefore reject and abandon those beliefs... There seems to be a relationship between efficiency and skepticism

The focus of the study, is the use of critical thinking and reasons, in addressing life challenges.

Atheists are higher in ranking, compare to theists.

By default, religious beliefs intercept and inhibit (though at different degrees), a rational approach to addressing life challenges.

This Is A Scientific Analysis and Interpretion of A Studies (Quoted By Wikipedia)

One of the few peer reviewed scientific articles I could find on the topic had the straightforward name, “Average intelligence predicts atheism rates across 137 nations.” This article analyzes IQ and religiosity data from “137 countries that represent 95% of the world population” and claims to show that nations with more intelligent citizens tend to have more Atheists. I plotted the data from that article below.

iq-vs-religiosity-worldwide

(for the statistics nerds, the R^2 on a linear regression = 0.352)

What we see is a fairly weak relationship between national religiosity and average national IQ. Once we get up to about 20% of the population being Atheist, the IQ of the population flatlines at around 100 from then on. Even worse, in the ~0% Atheist range, there’s a wide range of national IQs from 64 to 100+ — with a cluster of low-IQ nations that appear to be driving the “trend.”

If we focus on the lowest IQ nations in the above chart, we notice that several of them are poor nations in e.g. Africa. That led me (and others who have reviewed the topic) to wonder whether the wealth of a nation better predicts the average intelligence of its citizens. After all, the more wealthy the average citizen is, the more time they have to dedicate to intellectual pursuits.

iq-vs-gdp-worldwide

(R^2 on a linear regression = 0.449; income per capita data from GapMinder)

Indeed, if we look at income per capita instead of religiosity, we already see a much better correlation with average IQ. The correlation between religiosity and IQ is too weak to suggest that religiosity predicts intelligence on the national level. Anyone who claims otherwise is grasping at straws.
