AUDU OGBEH : FG TO BAN IMPORTATION OF TOMATO PASTE
Audu Ogbeh
FG to ban importation of tomato paste

The minister said the ban would be on health ground as a NAFDAC report says foreign tomato pastes imported into Nigeria are bad.

The Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has said that the Federal Government will soon ban the importation of tomato pastes into the country.
Ogbeh said a report by the National Agency for Food and Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says foreign tomato pastes imported into Nigeria are not good.

He stated this during the oversight visit of the House of Representatives Committee on Agricultural Production and Services, chaired by Rep Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno) to the ministry in Abuja on Monday, November 28.

He said: "The Chinese are the ones messing us up on tomato paste. Each time Dangote tries to produce, they lower their prices. There’s a report by NAFDAC on the quality of foreign tomato pastes. The report is very bad.

"We think we have every reason in that report to ban foreign tomato pastes into the country. If you don’t ban it on health ground, you have to ban it on any other ground."

Members of the committee asked the minister to explain the measures government is taking to avert food crisis next year in view of the influx of foreigners buying Nigerian grains.

Responding, Ogbeh said: "It’s time to fill our silos.

"The export is huge now, but if you stop it, farmers will get very angry. When you go round, they tell you they get so rich now. But if you stop it and the prices fall, you discourage farmers. We’re in the market now buying and storing."

Time for dubious profiteers to start hoarding tomato paste. Also the time for smart businessmen to scramble into the tomato paste business, else Dangote and Erisco would monopolise the market (that's if Erisco decides to return).

You are.

Do you want Nigeria to be self sufficient?

Do you prefer we import?

Ar you complaining because this is a Buhari policy?

Are you complaining because it would prevent you from producing, importing or simply because it would make the president popular?

Like I said continue crying while cottage producers of tomato paste smile to the bank.

You misunderstood my intentions
Before banning anything right now you must look at the situation on ground shocked so that you can prevent untold hardship.
You heard that rice is now N8000 right? But how many people are seeing this rice
Now that fresh tomatoes is now expensive he want to banned tomato paste
How many companies in Nigeria is producing this paste right now
Recently a company just moved.
Are they encouraging local company to grow
With multiple taxation and epileptic power supply
In order not to be self centered you need not think about yourself alone.
Peace out

80% of tomato paste imported into Nigeria is contaminated — Audu Ogbeh

Nigeria's minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh has divulged that eighty percent of the tomato paste imported into the country is unhealthy for consumption.

Ogbeh made his assertion on Thursday during the 2017 budget defence session before the Senate and House of Represenative lawmakers.

The minister said his revelation had backing from a report by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), adding that some harmful ingredients and heavy metals constituted these toxins being referenced.

He added that the continued consumption of these contaminated tomatoes was the underlying cause of diseases such as kidney failure and liver dysfunction.

He further reiterated government's commitment to end importation of all food types and rather encourage local production of everything Nigerians consume.

It is not just by growing. Farmers need loans that are not available, access to modern farming equipments that don't come cheap, good roads to transport the produce from the farm to the city and constant power supply to store fresh harvests and these things, good roads and constant electricity, are non existent.

Nigeria is not conducive for start ups and many businesses have relocated to other countries.

I agree wiseandtrue on this one. We are ill prepared for this
