The Deji of Akure, Oba Oluwadare Adesina III, Osupa has been deposed by the Akure Traditional Council. He was found guilty on various allegations leveled against him.

The council, consequently warned Adesina to quit the palace immediately and hand over all items belonging to the Akure community including the funds that belonged to the community.

Adesina, was dethroned as Deji after reigning for four years. The monarch assumed the throne of Deji of Akure on November 26, 2005 after 10 years of interregnum and was removed having been found guilty of conducting himself in a manner “unbefitting and desecrates of the much exalted, revered and respected throne of the Deji of Akureland.”

According to the resolution of the Akure Council of Chiefs, including the 17 traditional kingmakers that approved Adesina’s installation, various allegations had been leveled against him.
The resolution signed by the traditional Prime Minister of the town, Chief Folorunso Davies, the Olisa of Akure, the Odopetu of Akure, Chief M.A. Falade, the Elemo of Akure, Chief Bolanle Adedipe and others found the erstwhile monarch guilty of the offences.

The council said that some of the allegations include: “Violation of Akure tradition and custom by personally going to the market to disturb market women from trading and engaging in wanton and indiscriminate destruction of essential food items in the markets.

“Flagrant breach of age long and hallowed custom of Akure that makes it mandatory for the Deji not to leave his official palace without the knowledge and concurrence of the chiefs.
“Oba Oluwadare Adepoju Adesina deliberately failed and refused to complete the traditional rites for the stool of the Deji of Akureland contrary to the tradition and custom of Akure. By so doing, he renders his selection and appointment incomplete haven failed to give Akure chiefs the traditional ‘Igbarunjo’.
“Incessant, rampant and re-occurring cases of highhandedness, brutal and repressive oppression of the people in and around the Akure community.

“Oba Oluwadare Adepoju Adesina has been personally leading a team of recruited and sponsored thugs, gangsters, hoodlums and armed terrorists to the people’s houses at the late hours of the night to inflict injuries on innocent citizens in the Akure community in his presence and at his instructions and directives.”

Apart from these, the council added that part of the allegation against the embattled Deji were descration of the palace and grooming of a notorious gang known as “60 by 120” that was involved in land disputes.
Having carefully investigated the allegations leveled against him, the council said, “the entire members of the Akure Council of Chiefs and the Akure Community have considered you as unfit, unworthy and improper to continue to occupy the cherished and exalted throne of Deji of Akure land having brought disgrace, dishonour and impudence to the office.

The chief said further: “You are consequently warned in the interest of peace to stop holding yourself out or parading yourself as the Deji of Akure kingdom henceforth.”
The Olisa of Akure said the kingmakers were misled in choosing Adesina as Deji of Akure in the first instance and were ready to correct the mistake made four years ago.

So far, I have not heard of any specific offence unless going to the market is one. As for thugs, my body guards are thugs to you and your body guards are thugs to me.

To remove an Oba, they have to be more specific like killing a pregnant woman for rituals or so. Otherwise, it is all politics. Another Oba was removed because he called himself a Xtian and refused to performe some human sacrifice ritual. It boils down to money and politics abeg.

TODAY'S UPDATE ON THE DEJI OF AKURE ISSUE:

Ashroud of confusion descended over the throne of Deji of Akure on Monday with the Ondo State Government and kingmakers singing discordant tunes on the fate of embattled King Adesina Oluwadare Adepoju. While the state Commissioner for Information, Remi Akerele, issued a statement declaring that the Deji’s throne was not vacant, the kingmakers insisted the Oba’s dethronement announced on Sunday was final.

Akerele’s statement reads: “The attention of Ondo State Government has been drawn to newspapers publications wherein some Akure chiefs purportedly removed the Deji of Akure, Oba Adepoju Adesina.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Ondo State Government has not removed the Deji of Akureland and indeed any Oba in Ondo State.
“We, therefore, appeal to the people of Akure and indeed Ondo State to go about their lawful duties, and nobody should allow himeself or herself to be used to destroy the peace and progress which Ondo State currently enjoys.
“The State Commissioner of Police and other security agencies have been briefed to maintain the existing peace in Ondo State.”
However, kingmakers said they could not rescind their decision because the monarch had been a bad image for the community.

The kingmakers’ statement came barely a day after they announced the removal of Deji of Akure for violating traditions and customs of the land. They have already begun the selection process to appoint a new Oba for Akure Kingdom.
Speaking with reporters in Akure, the Elemo of Akure, High Chief Bolanle Adedipe said they took the decision after carefully consulting different stakeholders
He said, “at this point we have reached a point of no return on Deji’s issue. Our decision remains the final.”
Adedipe who is the spokesman of the chiefs said the Akure sons and daughters should have nothing to do with the palace of Deji until further notice.

His words: “The Deji is supposed to be a personification of customs and tradition not a breaker of customs. As far as we are concerned there is no Deji in Akure. We are to uphold tradition.
“We are unhappy with the way he ignored the kingmakers and high chiefs at a meeting, which was convened to resolve allegations leveled against him (Oba).
“He walked out of the meeting which was convened to clear the air over some allegations of disregard to and abuse of traditions and customs preferred against him.”
The act, which Adedipe said was the second, was contrary to the traditions for a Deji to walk out on Akure people.
He added, “this is not the first time he will be doing this. His first disrespect and rudeness was when he was new on the throne, even though he was later pardoned.”

Deji of Akure in free-for-all •Strips self half-naked to beat wife •Wife hospitalised
www.tribune.com.ng

THE rich Yoruba tradition and customs were thrown to the winds on Sunday evening as the Deji of Akure, Oba Oluwadare Adesina, engaged in a free-for-all with one of his oloris (queen) on the street of the town.

The monarch left the palace in company with the last olori, Remi Abiola, and an Akure High Chief to engage his second olori, Bolanle, in a free-for-all on Hospital Road, Akure.

The monarch, in the bid to engage his wife in fisticuffs, stripped himself half-naked and prepared himself for the battle.

The Pathfinder Jeep in which the Deji was driven marked “Deji of Akure” was damaged by irate youths that mobbed him and he was whisked away by a team of policemen in one of their patrol vehicles.

The monarch, in an attempt to escape being dealt with by the people of the area, fell into the drainage along the road and his cap fell off from his head.

After the confrontation, which lasted about three hours, Olori Bolanle was admitted at the state Specialist Hospital, Akure, as she was seriously wounded.

It was gathered that trouble started at about 5.30 p.m. on Sunday when the monarch, along with Remi, stormed the residence of the second olori located on 141, Hospital Road, Akure, in the Jeep and a Toyota Starlet, marked Ondo AL 963AKR.

Immediately they alighted from the vehicle that brought them and on sighting them, Olori Bolanle went into her room and asked the people around to tell them she was not around.

But when they could not see her, the monarch was alleged to have ordered the youth that accompanied him to burn down the building.

Nigerian Tribune further learnt that it was at this stage that Bolanle surfaced from her room to challenge the people on the reason they invaded her residence.

Her emergence aggravated the situation as Oba Adesina was said to have ordered that hot ashes believed to have been mixed be poured on her.

One of the women at the scene who attempted to shield the Olori was said to have been burnt as the skin on her arms peeled off immediately the ashes touched her body.

While this was going on, the Olori who came along with Adesina was alleged to have smashed a big plank on the back of Bolanle following which the two engaged in a fight.

However, the younger brother of the attacked Olori and the youth of the area mobilised against what they perceived as injustice to Olori Bolanle and mobbed the monarch and his entourage.

When it was obvious that the youth wanted to lynch Adesina and that he could not escape without being beaten or molested, the Officer-in-Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) was contacted and he sent his men to the scene.

The monarch’s vehicle was damaged and blocked with another Xterra Jeep belonging to Olori Bolanle, hence the monarch escaped in the police patrol vehicle.

It was, however, learnt that the monarch and the attacked Olori had been at loggerheads for sometime, a development that made the Olori to pack out of the palace and relocated to her parents’ home.

Oba Adesina was said to have invaded Olori Bolanle’s residence to retrieve the property he bought for her, including the Xterra Jeep.

Speaking with newsmen on her sick bed, Bolanle said it was Oba Adesina that led his palace chiefs and some hoodlums to attack her in her residence.

She said she was seriously beaten while an unknown substance was poured on her.

She said she would institute a legal action against the monarch over the invasion of her house and the injuries inflicted on her.

Several attempts to speak with the monarch were not successful as his mobile phones were switched off.

He could equally not be seen at the palace as he was said not to be around at press time.
