The Sokoto State Government has successfully conducted a test-run of its N3.8 billion Independent Power Project (IPP).

The project, awarded in November, 2008, is the first of its kind in the Northern part of the country, with an installed capacity of a minimum of 30 megawatts and a maximum of 38 megawatts. The Chief Operating Officer of the contracting firm, Vulcan Elvaton Ltd, Franklin Ngbor, told newsmen during the test-run that the turbine of the project was already tested three times.

“What remains now is the synchronisation of the plant with the fuel tank and the main evacuation line, down to transmission line.

“The plant when fully completed, finally fired and integrated into the national grid, can work for five
consecutive years nonstop.

“It is only after it works for five years that it can be shut down for routine maintenance,” Mr. Ngbor said.

The Director-General of the project, Umar Bande, stated that the plant has a multiple type turbine hat can use diesel, gas or LPFO. According to Mr. Umar, the plant was now being test run on diesel, saying “it consumes 33,000 litres per day.”

The DG said plans are afoot to sign a fuel supply security agreement with the Nigeria National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) or other major oil
firms.

This, he noted, was to make the fuel supply cheaper, more sustainable and ensure maximum operations of the plant.

The Secretary to the State Government, Bashir Garba, said so far, nine stages, out of 11, required for a successful test run, have been carried out without hitches. He said an agreement will soon be signed between the state government and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), on the evacuation of the power to the national grid.

Mr. Garba explained that the project was necessitated by the epileptic power supply to the state from the national grid.

“The state will be enjoying nearly 24-hour power supply when the plant becomes fully operational.

“This is a project that is worth celebrating as power supply in Nigeria will be bolstered with the injection of 38 megawatts to the national grid.

“This will also eventually boost the socioeconomic landscape in the state, curb poverty, restiveness and unemployment, among other myriad of direct and indirect benefits,” the SSG said.

"N3.8 billion Independent Power Project (IPP)... ...with an installed capacity of a minimum of 30 megawatts and a maximum of 38 megawatts"
These are interesting figures. If just N3.8billion could build a 30mw gas/diesel plant, then I would assume N38 billion can build a 300mw plant and N380billion (~$1bn) can build a 3000mw plant.

If these above figures are real, one begins to wonder how OBJ spent $16billion and GEJ spent about $8billion, yet power generation capacity is still not up to 6000mw.

“it consumes 33,000 litres per day.”
This is one bloody expensive venture to operate, reason Nigeria should forget the initial capital cost and consider solar power.

This sounds like the first goodnews of the year coming from the North.

It has always been bombings, kidnappings, killings, herdsmen, IDPs, cattle rustling, bandits etc news all year round.

Up North grin grin grin

Indeed Tambuwal and others are doing well cool cool

Unlike South West, where there is no progress in power..always relying on Niger Delta gas

Important points:

“it consumes 33,000 litres per day.” ie One trailer per day shocked
“It is only after it works for five years that it can be shut down for routine maintenance,” shocked shocked

N3.8b for such project.
That was so reasonable
Meanwhile
Peter Odili commissioned useless Gas turbine in Omoku
.. .. @cost of N150b 10yrs ago. Up till today, no electricity from that project.

Yesterday governor of Bayelsa state shamelessly gathered PDP governors for inspection of N500b state Airport meanwhile he cannot pay ½ salary that he promised for over 7months.

No need to feed it to the national grid again ..I am tired of that lame law ..let it be used to power sokoto city which will automatically make more power available on the national grid

Typical ahboki....you people don't even think of tomorrow no wonder you can tie a bomb around your waist and blow the little sense left in your empty head. How can you sustain 33000 litres of diesel per day? Your brain dey pain you? U no even get sef no vex.

If just N3.8 billion can produce this kind of project then I wonder why many states haven't already embarked on IPPs. That amount is much less than what one governor or godfather makes in a few months

That plant is not sustainable
It cost 33 000 liters per day to run it
300mw should cost 330 000 liters per day to run
3000mw should cost 3 300 000 liters to run
According to your logic...

You see why it's not sustainable?
