First, this site is for Christians to be encouraged and equipped in their faith, and because we are "family" we often speak in a language that is sometimes referred to as "Christianese."

We use terms such as "imputed righteousness," "justification by faith," "biblical truth," and many others that understandably sound foreign to an atheist such as yourself who has put himself in the middle of a Christian conversation.

The term "Biblical truth" means that what is being discussed is rooted in scripture and is therefore immutable. It can be utterly relied upon because God can't lie, as opposed to the ever-shifting "truths" that come through the lips of fallible and often deceitful men.

No doubt you have a measure of faith in what you have been told by your teacher or what you've seen on TV or read in books, so tell me something that you "know" to be true.

By "true" I mean "immutable." Give me one scientific fact that you know of that will never, ever, change..."an actual truth, which I would define as a statement about reality supported by facts."

Whatever you give me, it will come back to your subjective belief, but that unwavering faith you have at the moment could be destroyed in a second if suddenly science came along with extra information. That's how science works. You can never be absolutely sure of anything. Nothing to you is true.

Ray Answers: Your statement shows that you neither know what Christianity delivers or what "religion" offers.

Religion says that if you are good enough and do enough, you may bribe God enough to give you everlasting life. It is hopeless because it can't deliver its hope. God will not pervert justice by allowing Himself to be bribed. In fact His Word warns "The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to God." Try and bribe an earthly judge and you will find yourself under the wrath of criminal law. Religious works simply stir more wrath from God for our sin.

Christianity is different. It says that although the Judge is wrath-filled against all wickedness, He is rich in mercy and has provided a Saviour. Jesus took the wrath of God's Justice upon Himself—taking the punishment for our sins. Through His death and resurrection, God can now freely forgive our sins and let us live. He grants us the "gift" of eternal life (see Romans 6:23). We don't have to strive to earn God's favour. It's freely given to us because He is good and kind.

So religion is utterly hopeless, while Christianity delivers eternal salvation from death and Hell to all who repent and trust alone in Jesus.

Ray Answers: If a judge shut his eyes to Mafia murders, he is a corrupt judge and should be prosecuted himself. If God is good He must see that perfect justice is done. The Bible warns that that will happen on Judgment Day. God will punish all murderers and rapists, but He is so good, and so just, He will also punish thieves, liars, fornicators, adulterers, and even those who have lusted (see Matthew 5:27-28) and hated (see 1 John 3:15). Ray Answers: His statements were obviously symbolic. This is how you can know that. When He passed the cup of wine to His disciples and said "This is my blood," His physical blood was still in His veins. It wasn't in the cup. When He passed the bread to them and said that it was His flesh, He flesh stayed on His body. They didn't eat Him. They instead ate the bread He passed them. When He told them that He was the "door," it was symbolic of the fact that He is the only way to eternal life, and that He wasn't a physical door with hinges.

A young pastor I knew was confined to a wheelchair and tragically died in a horrible fire. On the flip side there are atheists who have lived happy lives to a ripe old age. Then there's the question as to why God allowed Hitler to live as long as he did. There were many attempts on his life, and he miraculously survived them all.

Ray Answers: If you already had children you wouldn't need to ask that question. Of course she will be born with a sinful human nature (“born in sin" is your wording). You will spend years correcting her and teaching her to do what is right, because she will intuitively know how to do what is morally wrong. She will know how to be selfish, and because you love her you will teach her to share. She will know how to lie. Hopefully, you will teach her to speak the truth. She will instinctively know how to be disobedient to you and your wife. You will teach her to obey, because you love her. Sin it has nothing to do with being guilty until you are proven innocent. It's one of life's realities.
