Effects Of Ban On Importation Of Vehicles Through Land. by babadoo(m): 8:19am On Dec 07, 2016
Anna Okon.
From next month, importation of vehicles through the land borders will be prohibited, according to a new prohibition order issued by the Federal Government to that effect. The prohibition order covers all new and used vehicles.

A statement issued on Monday by the Nigeria Customs Service indicated that the ban was sequel to a presidential directive restricting all vehicle imports to the seaports with effect from January 1, 2017.

Now, what could be the effects of this ban on Nigerians? This will definitely lead to an increase in revenue to the Nigerian government, but does it mean there will be a decrease or increase in the cost of vehicles in Nigerian? Pls we need to know so that those intending to buy cars will know how to adjust and plan.

It doesnt have any effect,Cotonou cars are even more expensive than bringing cars from usa if you use the right channel
Beside Nigerian dealers are greedy you shouldnt have sympathy for them
No matter how cheap they got the car they'd still sell it at normal market prices because dollar is 485 naira
Common man are not enjoying anything

Lol, sometimes I have these exact thoughts
Re: Effects Of Ban On Importation Of Vehicles Through Land. by Denn(m): 4:33am On Dec 08, 2016
Price of imported cars would skyrocket...the average car dealer has been shipping via the land borders and short -paying duties in the last few years, this cheap alternative is being removed hence the expected increase in price

Smuggling would resume in earnest. Even with the ban on rice and turkey, it is still being imported on large scales, how much more cars.

Car theft would increase.

Most car buyers would look inwards and buy Nigerian used cars. The economic situation is actually increasing the supply of this market and I don't envisage a large increase in used car values due to this. Infact, it is very possible that Nigerian used car values would come down dollar wise.

Taking the case of the 1999 Toyota Camry aka pencil light, the car which sold for #600,000 when dollar was still #200 ( $3000) now retails for around #650,000 at a dollar rate of over #400 ($1,625). The same trend is expected in further years.

advice: buy Nigerian used cars

If the government will revert back to the old 30% tarif and probably route other items to other ports, it won't be a bad idea.

it is parochial to use the phrase "Nigerian dealers" when discussing national policies, always look at the big picture.
whatever affects the dealers will affect you in the long run, you are not immuned in anyway.

Every cost incurred by the dealer is passed down to the end user, so when you isolate the "dealers", you are indirectly referring to yourself.

the effect is plenty
firstly seme boarder, idi iroko boarder and other land boarder revenue will decrease.
secondly smuggling will increase.
custom officers will be more corrupt.
clearing and forwarding agents, burea du change dealers and businesses around the boarders will reduce which will have effect on these communities.
crime rate will increase as a result of this.
prices of cars, spare parts will increase and so on.

If you watch the clip on channels, the dealer there said he does not have the ticket to go to America/London to buy car and they pay N2.8m to clear container.

The point I have been trying to get across all this time is very few dealers actually travel out to buy and ship cars in, most depend on US based dealers to buy at auction and ship it over while trying to meet market price.

At the rate they were going it made no sense for customs to collect 70%+ of their profit as duty(basically working for those fat cats).

Us dealers/importers sometimes ship to cotonou sell it to dealers there or fly in to sell to Nigerian dealers or sell cars to public flyout leaving the money/profit in Nigeria for projects. Cost and dealer makes turnaround of 21 days impossible.

Our people at the port will still do what they do because even their Oga on Tv could never admit that they were doing something wrong.
When all their customers move to the next port and these guys with a straight face no national tv imply that they were crooks trying to avoid duty payment and there was an unlisted 35% duty on new cars.

Simply all those who make laws see all Nigerians as crooks, so laws will be made to treat all as crooks. Now that all shippers through Cotonou are crooks why pay duty then.

There is no reason to pay duty on a route that does not exist same reason the government does not collect duty on the AK47 the herders carry around. How many custom officers do you see asking fulani man where he got his AK47?

Shippers fought back against the policy at Nigerian ports by abandoning it now they will fight back against any government that labels them criminal by doing h=whatever they have to do to keep the economy going.

Trade between people is not illegal the government is to create enabling environment for all not create a barrier to exploit.
