There are strong indications that there is no provision for new minimum wage or salary increment for government workers in the 2017 proposed budget.

For the year 2017 the federal government has proposed a budget of N7,281,361,611,853. The proposed budget represents an increase of 19.95% over the 2016 Appropriation of N6.07 trillion.

However the government, retained the social intervention programme of N500 billion in the 2017 Budget.

A source said: “I don’t think we should be talking about salary increment or new minimum wage. What will really assist Nigerians and the workers are the social intervention programmes and investments in infrastructure.

“Most of the government policies are targeted at reducing unemployment and poverty and wealth creation. These are areas of benefits for Nigerians and the workers.”

The Presidency official, however, politely declined to give details of the domestic and foreign borrowings in the 2017 Budget, saying the details would be provided by the President during the budget presentation.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, December 7, formally told the Senate, that he would present the budget proposal before a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on Wednesday, December 14.

In a letter read by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, at the plenary, President Buhari said the 2017 budget would contain proposals and packages that would lead Nigeria out of the present economic recession.

Was the N500b social welfare intervention implemented in the 2016 budget?

As at the last time I checked, the #5k scheme for 25 million Nigerians & free meals for school children hadn't yet been implemented, among other welfare schemes, even though N500b was earmarked for welfare scheme in 2016.

But as usual, the zombie NASS being headed by Mumu Saraki will rubberstamp the budget, after all it's a give and take thing.

But how APC was able to silence many opinion voices in Nigeria who could awaken and call Nigerians out for peaceful demonstrations, still baffles me. All of a sudden, NLC, TUC, ASUU, NANS etc, became toothless dogs. There won't be salary increase but those politthiefans are busy buying new cars and living luxurious lifestyle when most civil servants have become 'carless' and professors now earn barely $1,000.

Who hath bewitched you, oh Nigeria and Nigerians?

the reason Nigerians, organised labour and civil society seems docile is because there is no viable opposition.

the so called elites who would have funded the protest are hiding somewhere with their loots because of the fear of efcc

people who are talking right now are basically inconsequencial

inflation high, fuel price increased, taxes on salaries up, price of food stuff up but nothing to up salaries

legislators however have enough money to buy 508 and land crusiers and collect full sitting allowance

imagine if Gej was the one who has done half of what Buhari is doing

its a shame

I have truly lost hope in this country

is this supposed to be a surprise or what?

only those who wish to deceive themselves or are paid to support a lying regime believed this regime when it promised to increase salaries as part of measures to alleviate the burden of increase in fuel prices & its attendant effects.

this regime is on autopilot & unfortunately, wrong directions were inputted into the system...
