2016 has been packaged with a box full of challenges for businesses; governments, state and local governments have been unable to pay salaries and the prices of both locally and foreign made products have risen astronomically.

In the publishing sector, the prices of paper and printing plates have risen by more than fifty percent. Several Nigerian publishers have had to resort to cost cutting measures to stay in business. How then do the publishers break even? How do the authors whose books are one of their major sources of income come out buoyant from this turmoil?

Most publishers whose books are printed in India and China have had to patronise the local printers, some have stopped taking orders, and hopeful the situation will become better. It is our hope that the coming year will bring forth the expected ease to the tensed business atmosphere.

Notwithstanding the challenges the publishing sector faced in 2016, some publishers have struggled to stick to the vision of their establishments. Five of these publishers have been carefully selected based on their innovative products and services, culturally inclined books and continuous engagement with the virtual community.

5. RASMED PUBLICATIONS, IBADAN

The Gbadega Adedapo led Rasmed has evolved from an emerging Dugbe based publishing house to a top player in the international book market, creating highly educative materials available in both the print and electronic medium.

Rasmed Publications new website is colourful, highly informative and easy to browse through. Their Facebook fanpage and twitter handle are also updated on a regular basis. I understand Rasmed considers manuscripts for publication on a regular basis. It is important that the companys submissions guidelines be made available on their website, alongside testimonials of some of their authors.

I want to also know how the company has been able to contribute to initiatives within their immediate community. This is very important. Publishers must become socially responsible. They must learn to separate a percentage of their yearly profits to support initiatives in their communities, and not only dole out books.
