Great way to think, u shouldn't argue with some people because they are too emotional and sentimental to think.

While Americans voted to have their goods produced in America even with clear evidence that it will cost more in the market some silly Nigerians are discrediting local production because it is same price with imported.

We can all see why America is far better than Nigeria, to make the matter worse most of the people discreting it are unemployed youth that may have chance to be gainfully employed if this things are encouraged.

Is it not better to buy cement, rice, computer, phones, clothe, building materials, furniture's, automobile etc at exorbitant price and we are all gainfully employed in the company that makes those goods than to be poor and jobless while we buy cheap foreign products.

Nigerian youth have to think and start reasoning like their counpart in the other side of the world otherwie we will remain backward for long.

Good talk. U see many of the youth, do not understand how these things work. They think it is all about price. And comparing local products and foreign ones.

Why are we like this?....instead of us to support this laudable initiative, some people are already wailing.Am sure with time the price will naturally come down.Lets take our minds back to when MTN came into d country, the price of the sim then n what obtains now.Kudos to the greatest University in the land.

The point is if I have direct access to import I can also bag it and say i grew it on my farm. re you sure it was not imported. lets see the picture of the farm, etc. If it is home grown it should be cheaper by far.

fiizznation:
Young man, we are talking about sincere diversification here. At least we are seeing how nigerians are producing what they will consume and not the other way round. The price will definitely be slashed in the long run, this I'm very sure of.

Policies should be put in place to enforce this. Expecting people to use emotion / sentiment to make such decisions won't work!

Who will make such policy when majority of the citizenry are educated illiterate, any body that thinks outside the box from sharing of money, awarding of contracts that will never be executed, allowing masivse looting will be termed enemy.

Laudable. But that price is no different from what we have in the market already, because by extrapolation, 50kg will still cost about 18-20k
the target is to reduce the demand for dollars, so the value of dollars can be reduce, which will in-turn reduce the price of rice as time goes on.

Most of us in Ibadan won't even buy this rice. Its gonna be hard to convince all the market women in bodija to buy loads of this rice for this price, when imported rice that everybody trusts is #17,000. When golden penny noodles came newly it was sold for #25 against #35 of noodles. So we gave it a try coz it was cheap and we saw it was good. This is a welcomed development but trust me even if this rice is being imported and bagged here people won't buy much for that price bcoz its a bit higher than the one we already used to. Now that they claim its locally made, hmmmm....

Nonsense, what will make a 50kg bag of local rice to cost 19k?

Are they also buying dollar from the BDC?

If 25kg is selling for 9.5k, and you merely double to 50kg, won't you get 19k? True maybe a discount for buying larger, but it's in the same ballpark.

Are you saying that 25kg local rice should not cost 9.5k?

The cost of local rice is still affected by the price of seedlings, fertilizer, machines to cultivate, tend, and harvest, petrol for those machines, transport to milling, the bags, milling machines, transport to market. The milling process also needs generator and diesel. Then add the fact that those selling it need enough profit to take care of their own personal expenses, which have also risen. Even university expenses have gone up.

The only thing that is "local" about the rice is the land and labour. Everything else is dollar-dependent.

This is nice. Nobody operates a mono economy in this "capitalist" world anymore. If only the evil empire called pdp didn't waste 16yrs doing nothing, Nigeria would have definitely made tremendous progress in agriculture, housing, education, health etc. But what did we get during pdp's era of corruption and impunity, NOTHING.

PDP pushed the country into recession, they gave us gigantic poverty and terrorism, and the thieves still have the nerves to point their leprosy inflicted fingers at APC. Anyway Nigerians will surely be grateful for making the right decision, the decision of voting for positive change, the decision of putting nigeria on the right track, the decision of sending those pdp penrobbers back to where they rightly belong

Well said.

Re-election is no excuse. Baba shouldn't pre- occupy himself with that. He should put the nation first and ahead of his personal interest/ambition. Too many times have we been made to suffer because of the personal ambitions of those we trusted with power. Nationalism should be the priority. Mandela comes to mind in this light; Especially about patriotism, nationalism, healing and bonding a fractured country and working for the people while in government. He had SA as his priority even over his own immediate family. One thinks, Buhari will be of same mould though that is yet to be seen. Nigeria is waiting....

All this rice this rice that being produced by everybody for 9k etc is now getting ridiculous!

Can we produce rice in commercial quantity? That's the main question and not producing rice for few hundred people, then shouting about it all over social media.

Nigerians eat tonnes of millions of rice per day!

Of course we can. Previous government prefers we import, thereby stifling the efforts of farmers. If a small country like Thailand can produce enough rice to feed themselves and feed a whole West Africa, why can't we. If I were President, I'll completely ban rice importation.

kolaaderin:

Good way to think. Nigerians without brain will query why the price would have to be hi, not observing the huge benefit we are gaining from local production.

- less stress on naira to dollar exchange rate
- employment opportunities to the masses.
- later in the future a good source of foreign earnings to the country.
- and a nation that can never go hungry no matter the world crisis.
