Radiation therapy comes in several forms, but all kinds of radiation therapy involve a planning procedure referred to as the “simulation.” The first portion of the simulation is to organize a reproducible setup position that you will assume for each treatment. A frame or mask for your head will be made custom such that you will be able to get into the same posture with an excellent accuracy for each radiation treatment. The simulation session normally takes about one hour to finish and most commonly involves X-ray pictures or a CT scan of your head in the treatment posture. These pictures are used to sketch the suitable radiation beams for your therapy. Daily treatments are generally about 10-15 minutes within the treatment room with most of that time granted to setting you up accurately. Treatments are provided by radiation therapists, highly skilled technologists who presently undergo four years of training to achieve their radiation therapist license. The radiation beams are generally on for one to two minutes per day once the patient is in the correct pose. Treatments are set daily, Monday through Friday, for five therapies per week. The total number of treatments most frequently ranges between 25-30 treatments, meaning a total of 5-6 weeks.
