It is a shame though. This issue has been reported in various media for months now yet nobody seems to be able to provide a concrete reason for its presence. When I say the African man is not innovative or inquisitive people would rain down with abuses. How is it possible that we have neither investigative journalists, researchers, nor governmental agencies state or federal, to determine the source of these pollutants which are sure to lead to respiratory diseases to a lot of locals in the near future? Shame of a nation. 3 Likes |

Obviously some foolish people want to quickly blame illegal oil refineries as the cause. Thats a fallacy. Even the so called legal oil refineries and activities deplete the environment. Developed countries know this and thats why everybody is moving to other sources of energy. We have to start thinking of moving on from crude oil. This structure where all other parts of the country are waiting for black gold from the south at the detriment of the environment cant continue forever. |
Re: Black Soot Pollutes The Environment In Port Harcourt (PICS) by daveP(m): 10:10am On Feb 09, 2017 |
If they don't do something about this illegal oil structure, there will be poor visibility to even move around. Bringing back reminiscences of the one that the British experienced just after the world war cos of Wiston's stubbornness. Not until a close one died in an accident as a result of the soot do he order the close down of the factory. This may affect kids soon..... |

This is bad. Here's what I saw online
IS SOOT JUST DIRTY?
No. Soot is deadly . Soot causes thousands of
premature deaths, asthma attacks, and heart
attacks each year.
The size of those tiny particles is directly linked
to the terrible trouble they cause. Particles
smaller than a speck of dust, and less than
1/30th the width of a human hair, can easily pass
through the nose and throat, penetrate and
embed in the lungs, and enter the bloodstream.
The smallest particles cause the largest amount
of damage because they can penetrate furthest
into the lungs and in some cases react directly
with DNA.
WHERE DOES SOOT COME
FROM?
The most significant sources of soot are diesel
engines, vehicle tailpipes, coal plant smokestacks,
oil refineries, and fires—the burning of large
forests for agricultural purposes produces soot,
and so does the use of grills, fireplaces and
cookstoves for cooking and heating.
Currently, more than 70 million Americans live in
areas that are in violation of the health standards
set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
That’s 70 million people exposed to spikes in fine
particle pollution at levels that EPA deems
unsafe.
HOW IS SOOT CONNECTED
TO GLOBAL WARMING?
Soot is a major cause of global warming. While
carbon pollution gets most of the headlines, soot
is a very important contributor to the problems
caused by climate change.
Climate scientists refer to black carbon—the main
component of soot—as a “climate forcer.” Soot
particles absorb radiation from the sun and can
hasten the melting of snow and ice cover when
they fall to the ground.
THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT
SOOT?
We can do something about soot pollution–
quickly! But we have to fight for strong soot
regulations.
We have good, affordable equipment to cut soot
emissions from tailpipes and smokestacks—
particle traps and filters. We can take the worst-
polluting vehicles off the road. We can use low-
emission diesel engines and equipment. We can
clean up large industrial boilers, coke ovens, and
brick kilns.
This means we can protect our health—and
especially the well-being of those most vulnerable
to soot, our children and our elderly . 2 Likes |

Thanks very much, @Nnemuka. I thought I'd do a thread on this today, but you already did it. Thanks again. To the subject on ground. It is horrible right now. Those who stay outside Port Harcourt won't really understand what we are talking about. If this continues for a long time, I am afraid, it won't be well with PH residents healthwise years down the line. It is no joke at all. I feel scared because we can't do anything about it by ourselves and to think that we have little children breathing in this polluted air everyday? Please, the government should wake up and do something really serious about this and not just tell us that they are aware of it. 1 Like |

Nnemuka: This is very scary especially with this Innocent baby. Please you all have to do more than this. Putting it on Nairaland alone won't solve the problem. Who is your Governor? People in PH have to organize a Peaceful protest as a matter of urgency. Everybody has to be part of this Protest. Put the city to a standstill for a Complete day or two and if possible 3days. The Governor, Government, International community will take note by Force and immediate action will be taken. The time of Complaints and Cry without Strong Action has passed in Nigeria because the government doesn't really care whether you live or die. So it is up to you the people to Force them to do their job. Please this is very Serious as a year is already too long. I feel so sorry for that innocent baby. Nnemuka, as this is affecting the entire city I see no reason why people waited for this long. I repeat the government doesn't care and you have to Force them to care by putting the entire city on lock down. No work for one day and the entire city go on a Peaceful protest and you will see results tomorrow. That is how this works. Godbless that innocent baby 1 Like |
