Having read from the beginning of this forum, my mind is set on pointing out that Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan are not the only provinces for new immigrants to move to. Haba!!! The Atlantic provinces are there too. British Columbia has an economy that ALL provinces are envious of: Balanced budget for the past 5 years. VANCOUVER is the only city i won't advise anyone to move to. There are many other economically-sound cities in BC: Kelowna, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Prince George etc.

I just don't get it why new immigrants tend to move to those popularly condensed cities where few jobs are chased by SO MANY qualified applicants. Plus the living expenses there is on a high side.

Well, you can say 'it is better to go to a place where there are Nigerians or people with similar background'. There are Nigerians in smaller/medium-sized cities. There is no city in the world you won't see a Nigerian and/or a Chinese. Quote me!

You can call me team small city or medium-sized city. Why go to those cities where you spend all your hard earned foreign currency (naira in this case), barely get a good job (probably not in your field because you need to do some certifications etc), pay high rent, even pay school fees (for those that have kids).

Talking about schools for kids. A friend that lives in Calgary pays about $18k to send ONE child to school while we pay NOTHING on kids schooling here (a medium-sized city in British Columbia and 'probably' cities with similar sizes). The glare reason is because the population in those 'bigger' cities is more than public school capacity there and as such, private schools excel. Please know that public schools are more preferred here because most private schools are for religious setting.

So bro @Philip3 and others, British Columbia is a province you can move to too or better still, as a new immigrant, why not move to a place with medium-size, acclimatize yourself (and family) to your new environment/culture. Afterwards, you move to wherever you want if you need to relocate. Not a fan of going to bigger cities because of 'popularity' then do some menial jobs JUST to survive. BC is a province i love and will continue to love because no city is extremely populated than others EXCEPT Vancouver and that is basically because of the weather (they hardly experience SNOW, for those that don't like snow).

In the end, it is a matter of adequate information and personal choice.

My family intends to settle there and I want to know how possible it will be for me to get job to assist my family as my husband is a doctor and will need to take licencing exam first before practising.

I also studied Computer science first degree and has done nothing with the degree except to gather some certifications, In the course of doing one of the certifications, i realised my area of interest is IT security ad it is also a lucrative emerging area in IT.

Now I want to fully understand and practice IT security without recourse to my ACCA certification but people are advising me otherwise. That i should move from known to unknown. That i should first use my ACCA to get their CPA/CGA and get job while working towards my IT security career.

People cant advise you much as you doing your own personal research, that the blunt truth, use LinkedIn, job website to scout jobs before you come ..but one advise is that experience is regarded more than certification and sometimes Canadian experience, a problem most Nigerians face is being over qualified for a job which is entry level and not qualified for a senior level position.

But if you can package your cv well , and can do well in the interview for an IT security job you might be lucky.
Will advise starting with the ACCA too for a start.

This is sound advice as Canadians will not readily consider you if you lack requisite work experience and you need to consider that the experience you have is foreign. It would be a good idea to get a foot in the door first based on your prior experience then once settled begin to work your way towards your desired path That i should first use my ACCA to get their CPA/CGA and get job while working towards my IT security career. This is okay and you can even consider transferring your accounting experience into opportunities in banking, finance and insurance. Insurance is a good career here unlike in Nigeria where it can be challenging

Please i need advise from people in these field and which city can i find both opportunities. Anywhere there are people earning money, you will need people with finance experience. This means you could settle anywhere especially where you have a support base like family and friends to help with your transition as a newcomer. If you're like me who is not concerned about having friends or family close by but more concerned with higher likelihood of career success, then you should target where there are the most opportunities. For me with my banking and finance background, the obvious choice was Ontario where you have the financial capital which is Toronto that also has a vibrant tech and IT sector. The move paid off for me and my wife as we both good jobs based on our prior experience, we didn't need to do any certification or go back to school. I picked off right from where I was in my career and am a people manager in a top 5 bank here. I researched which job opportunities were available through LinkedIn and other job boards, studied the job requirements till I understood them, networked with people working in that field, meeting them and discussing their experience/tips and incorporated all my findings into my own job search after attending a specialized training program for internationally skilled newcomers. With focus and determination, God did it for me and can equally do it for you

Hello house,i will be traveling soon coz am on study permit, i really need your advice on which one is much more better and preferable (base on experience) btw purchasing a laptop in Nigeria or in canada (considering cost). initially, i was thinking of buying it in canada wen i get there because i feel buying it in Nigeria will add to my luggage weight. On the other hand,i am getting more confused hearing people talk about how crazy they pay tax on every purchased goods in canada. please gurus in the house i need your advice oo and i mean a very good laptop not less than #200k here in naija thanks

I think it's more economical to buy the laptop in Nigeria, it's a crazy reality. When you compare prices in Nigeria to those in Canada, Nigerian prices are really competitive and reasonable. As for luggage weight, I advise you carry your laptop in your hand luggage and have it with you so you don't fall into the unfortunate situation of having it stolen in transit. Sadly, this is a risk of air travel across multiple transit points. Most of us just put our laptops in our carry-on, backpacks or rucksacks. If they (awon boys) want the laptop, they have to steal you too. Just make sure you have no pornography or questionable materials in your laptop in case of random customs search. America has taught us to be careful what you download and keep in your laptop and phone when you travel across borders, smh.

Depends on the configuration of the laptop you want, what specs are u looking at? Processor, RAM, HDD size, HDD or SSD, Screen size, etc. When u say not less than 200k, does that mean you can go as high as possible or u meant not more than 200k. Recently bought a Dell for 350k but d specs r quite high. Figure out what you want in the lappy first..
