INTRODUCING THE TROPICAL WAMBUGU APPLE.

For weather related reasons, Nigeria does not produce apples even though there has been a steady increase in its demand by middle class and large retail outlets.

Many still believe that apple cannot grow in Nigerian. But every year, Nigerians spend millions of dollars importing the fruit from South Africa and other European countries.

The reason Nigeria spends so much to import apple is not far fetched. People often eat apple raw but it can also be found in many prepared foods and drinks.

And there are many health benefits thought to result from eating apples.Statistics indicate that Nigeria imported 1,882 tonnes, 7,857 tonnes and 32,317 tonnes of apples between 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively from South Africa.

Industry watchers said these figures have increased tremendously in the last four years as millions of dollars is expended on importation of apples.

However, apart from statistics available in 2011, 2012, 2013, there is no recent data to indicate amount of apples imported and consumed in Nigeria, but large numbers of apples are imported and brought in through the nation’s borders. But the demand for the product continues to increase indicating that there is a sustainable market for apples in Nigeria, which is largely being driven by the increasing preference for fresh fruit over processed fruit.

It is clearly stated that apples that are sold at shops, in hotels and Nigerian markets have been harvested before they get ripe and they take weeks and months before getting here. Even the apples are injected somehow to preserve them.

There is good news for farmers who want to venture into this money spinning fruit. Today, there is a specie of apple called semi-arid apple, also known as ‘wambugu’ apple, which matches Nigeria’s weather conditions.

This basically means that the apple can grow and do well in Nigeria, as government is looking for a way of reducing import bills. The semi-arid apple was developed by Peter Wambugu, a man who used to work as a mechanic in the streets of Nyeri, central Kenya, now a trained agriculture expert.

The semi-arid apple can grow to climate of up to 36°, which is within Nigeria’s weather conditions because the apple specifically is for hot and warm areas and it has a lifespan of 50 years. The apple can grow in any West African country and anywhere in the world.

The semi-arid apple bears up 500 to 2000 fruits on each tree every season and it has two seasons in a year, starting between July, August, December and January.

The Chief Executive Officer, Wambugu Apple Farm, Peter Wambugu, said the semi-arid apple variety is a kind of apple that does best in hot and warm areas, which makes it different from any other imported apple, saying it requires only manure and water for it to grow well.

According to him, the semi-arid apple variety has a very good income as the harvest season comes every nine to 13 months. He explained: “I began this farming 40 years ago. Till now, even my children are still farming apples.

This apple won the best apple in the world that is able to grow anywhere in any climate and soil. The apples are organically grown and thus, they need good manure and water for them to grow better. They can grow to climate of up to 36°c. The apple takes nine to 14 months to mature to fruiting and one acre requires 310 plants.”

On planting. When you get your seedling, allow 5m by 5m spacing from one plant to another. 2fts by 2fts deep 2fts! Mix 1 bucket of manure with topsoil and return back to the hole later; putting 20 liters of water mix with the soil well and plant the seedling! Later do mulching! For pest control, since this apple has very few pests, it would be able to grow with very minimal maintenance. Climate and soil type are no problem for the semi-arid apple variety.

*WHY YOU NEED QUALITY NURSERY BAGS FOR QUALITY SEEDLINGS*

The quality of planting stock is a major factor in determining the success of tree farming. The survival of trees, growth performance, length of rotation period and volume and quality of fruits that can be harvested from a plantation are greatly influenced by the quality of seedlings used.

Seedlings raised in nursery should be of high quality and the nursery operator should focus on raising high quality seedlings rather than on the number of seedlings produced. It is better to produce fewer seedlings of high quality rather than to produce many seedlings of low quality.

Unfortunately, in Nigeria, most private and government nurseries concentrate on the quantity rather than on improving the quality of seedlings. Seedling quality refers to genetic and physical properties.

Genetic quality relates to the genetic characteristics of the source of germplasm, while physical quality refers to the physical condition of the seedling as it is raised in the nursery. The physical quality of seedlings can be improved by good practice within the nursery but there is no quick fix to improve seedling genetic quality.

Producing seedlings of high physical quality can be carried out when the seedlings are in the nursery, while raising seedlings of high genetic quality requires the application of appropriate technologies prior to the production of seedlings in the nursery. Improving the seedling genetic quality requires a long-term process of mother tree selection and an appropriate germplasm collection procedure. Also the use of quality seedlings materials like quality nylon bags cannot be left out .

*TIPS FOR POTTING OF TREE SEED IN NYLON BAGS*

If you are using nylon to raise your tree seeds ; it should have at least four to six holes on the bottom for excess water outlet.During filling of the nylon with well prepared potting soil; press the two bottom corners of the bag towards the inside to circle and flatten the bottom. This facilitates the bag to stand in an upright position. The size of the nylon to use for any tree seed depends on the species and the length of time the seedlings will stay in the nursery. For instance if you are to raise oil palm seeds that can stay up to a year in nursery it is ideal to use bigger size nylons because of the root spread rate. Then if you are to raise paw paw seeds, a smaller nylon bag is enough since the paw paw seedlings won't stay beyond a month in the nursery. As a general rule, larger nylon bags are used for bigger seeds. While smaller nylon bags are used for smaller seeds as illustrated above .

For purchase of quality nylon bags for quality seedlings or fruit trees ,do contact SEEDWORLD LTD 07082638957 (WhatsApp) Email : seedworldintegratedconceptltd@gmail.com

*INTRODUCING ROLL COVERS FOR CROPS PROTECTION*

*WHAT ARE ROLL COVERS*?

Row covers are made of lightweight fabrics available in a variety of cold-protection strengths. Double or even triple layering may be needed in some areas for continual harvest during the said period. Rain and sun still reach the plants because the fabric is permeable, although sunlight will be reduced by the degree of cold-protection of the fabric and the layers used. Be careful if you use plastic. It doesn’t allow in air or water and may cause overheating.

Cooking and salad greens will need to be covered in most areas for continual harvest. Onions and garlic are not covered .Applicable for fruit crops and veggies like lettuce, carrot, potatoes, spinach, cauliflower, leeks, Shrubs and Flowers, Plantain and Banana Fruits protection etc.

*NB : PP spun bond non woven fabric Uv stabilized..

*GENERAL BENEFIT OF USING ROLL COVER*

1. The primary benefit of row covers is they create a greenhouse effect that traps heat and raises day and night soil temperatures, which extends the growing season.

2. Roll Cover also keep the soil moist.

3. Roll cover prevent wind damage to crops..

4. Roll covers also control insects and other pests attack to crops.

5. Roll covers also deter foraging animals.

6.Roll cover are easy to install and are economical.

7. Roll cover also allow for easy harvesting.

8. Crops under roll cover protection remain relatively bug-free.

9..Crops under roll cover protection mature faster.

10. Crops under roll cover protection grow healthier.

11. Crops under roll cover protection produce sooner than expected.

12. Roll covers keep soil and plants from overheating .

*SPECIFICATIONS*

* Country of Origin : India

*Colour : White

* Length per Roll : 400 metres.

* Width per roll : 1.6 m

*Qty of roll per acre : 7 rolls*

*Can be used for two to Three crop circle*.

*HOW TO INSTALL ROLL COVERS ON YOUR CROPS*

The idea is to create a tunnel. This is easily accomplished by installing hoops, draping the fabric snugly over them and securing it to the ground.

The simplest way to create the hoops is to use thin, flexible wire usually available where you purchased the fabric. Simply push an end of the wire into the ground on one side of the row, loop it to the other side and push that end into the ground. For a standard plot, four hoops should be sufficient.

To create a more substantial hoop, use one-half-inch PVC pipe. This is available in plumbing shops and comes in 10-foot lengths. Use this length or cut it to eight feet, depending on the height of the crop you are covering.

To secure the PVC pipe, hammer a smaller size of PVC pipe into the ground on both sides of the plot, leaving six inches above the ground. Place the long PVC pipe over the smaller one.

If you use a wooden planting frame and want a permanent hoop for other seasons shading for instance, fasten the PVC pipe to the outside of the frame with clamps.

Drape the fabric over the hoops and secure it to the ground so it doesn’t come loose and expose vegetables to elements.

Hold the fabric in place with plastic stakes available from garden centres or with anything that’s handy – rocks, two-by-fours, metal pipes.

COCONUT VARIETIES.

Coconut genetic improvement lead to the development of different varieties of coconut which yield 80-100
nuts per palm per year under proper management as against 30-45 nuts from the unimproved coconut.

These include:

1. WEST AFRICAN TALL :

This variety produces 80-100 nuts/
palm/year with an estimated copra yield of 3.3 metric tons per hectare per year.

2. DWARF GREEN : This flowers 3-4 years after yield establishment
and produces 81 nuts/palm/year. From
studies and studies elsewhere, this variety has now been proven to be resistant to the Lethal Yellowing Disease of coconut. It is therefore now being advocated for combating the disease. This variety is also used for ornamental purposes

3. HYBRID COCONUT : This is a cross between the dwarf variety
and the tall. The hybrid flowers 5 years after planting and produces 94 nuts/palm/year with an estimated copra yield of 3.5 tonnes/ha/year.

4. MALAYAN DWARF YELLOW : This is an introduction from Malaysia which flowers 3 years after planting and
produces 84 nuts/palm/year with an estimated copra yield of 2.1 tonnes/ha/year. This variety is used mainly for
ornamental purposes.

5. MALAYAN DWARF RED : This is also an introduction from
Malaysia. It flowers about 3 years after field planting and produces 91 nuts/palm/year with an estimated copra yield of 2.3 tonnes/ ha/year. This variety is also mainly used for ornamental purposes.

*DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT*

The red vine is a shrubby shrub with climbing stems, cultivated in Europe since ancient times, mainly for its fruits, it has been introduced all over the world, its leaves are webbed and its fruit, the red Grape is used to produce wine.A variety of red vine, Vitis vinifera sylvestris, is a rare and protected species. The phytotherapists use the leaves, the fruits (the grapes) as well as The sap and grape seeds.

The red vine contains polyphenols (especially resveratrol) and flavonoids (oligo-proanthocyanidines and quercetin), these elements which give it its antioxidant and vasoconstrictor properties.

*RED GRAPE CURATIVE ACTION.

*INTERNAL USE**

Treatment of blood circulation problems (heavy leg syndrome, varicose veins, hemorrhoids) and painful or irregular periods.

*EXTERNAL USE*

In balm and lotion, the red vine is recommended to fight varicose veins and heavy legs.In decoction and infusion, it regulates venous insufficiency and abundant periods.

*USUAL THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS*

Anti-inflammatory and antioedematous: heavy legs, capillary fragility (small vessels under the skin), hemorrhoids, varicose veins, antioxidant action, diuretic properties.

*HOW TO USE AS A HERB FOR TREATMENT*

To treat venous insufficiency and varicose veins: take daily, in decoction or infusion, 30 to 50 g of vine leaves extract or 15 to 30 g of seed extract.

The red vine containing astringent tannins (acting especially in the uterus), is not recommended, in high doses, to pregnant women and young children.

In association with other plants (especially witch hazel), its action on blood circulation in general and varicose veins in particular is strengthened (balm with hawthorn, cypress and milk thistle)

INTRODUCING THE ENGLISH BREAD FRUIT.

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a species of flowering tree in the mulberry and jackfruit family (Moraceae) originating in the South Pacific and eventually spreading to the rest of Oceania.

British and French navigators introduced a few Polynesian seedless varieties to Caribbean islands during the late 18th century, and today it is grown in some 90 countries throughout South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean, Central America and Africa.

Its name is derived from the texture of the moderately ripe fruit when cooked, similar to freshly baked bread Andrews having a potato-like flavor.

*DESCRIPTION OF THE BREAD FRUIT*

Breadfruit trees grow to a height of 26 m (85 ft). The large and thick leaves are deeply cut into pinnate lobes. All parts of the tree yield latex, which is useful for boat caulking.

The trees are monoecious, with male and female flowers growing on the same tree. The male flowers emerge first, followed shortly afterward by the female flowers. The latter grow into capitula, which are capable of pollination just three days later.

Pollination occurs mainly by fruit bats, but cultivated varieties produce fruit without pollination. The compound, false fruit develops from the swollen perianth, and originates from 1,500-2,000 flowers visible on the skin of the fruit as hexagon-like disks.

Breadfruit is one of the highest-yielding food plants, with a single tree producing up to 200 or more grapefruit-sized fruits per season, requiring limited care.

In the South Pacific, the trees yield 50 to 150 fruits per year, usually round, oval or oblong weighing 0.25–6 kg. Productivity varies between wet and dry areas. Studies in Barbados indicate a reasonable potential of 16–32 short tons per hectare (6.5–12.9 short ton/acre).

The ovoid fruit has a rough surface, and each fruit is divided into many achenes, each achene surrounded by a fleshy perianth and growing on a fleshy receptacle.

Most selectively bred cultivars have seedless fruit, whereas seeded varieties are grown mainly for their edible seeds. Breadfruit is usually propagated using root cuttings.

Breadfruit is closely related to the breadnut, from which it might have been naturally selected.
It is noticeably similar in appearance to its relative of the same genus, the jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus).

Breadfruit has hundreds of varieties and thousands of common names varying according to its geographic distribution, and is cultivated in some 90 countries.

*BREAD FRUIT USES*

*FOOD*

Breadfruit is a staple food in many tropical regions. Most breadfruit varieties produce fruits throughout the year. Both ripe and unripe fruits have culinary uses, but unripe breadfruit is cooked before consumption.

Before being eaten, the fruits are roasted, baked, fried or boiled. When cooked, the taste of moderately ripe breadfruit is described as potato-like, or similar to freshly baked bread.

Because breadfruit trees usually produce large crops at certain times of the year, preservation of the harvested fruit is an issue. One traditional preservation technique is to bury peeled and washed fruits in a leaf-lined pit where they ferment over several weeks and produce a sour, sticky paste.

So stored, the product may last a year or more, and some pits are reported to have produced edible contents more than 20 years later. Fermented breadfruit mash goes by many names such as mahr, ma, masi, furo, and bwiru, among others.

Breadfruit can be eaten once cooked, or can be further processed into a variety of other foods. A common product is a mixture of cooked or fermented breadfruit mash mixed with coconut milk and baked in banana leaves. Whole fruits can be cooked in an open fire, then cored and filled with other foods, such as coconut milk, sugar and butter, cooked meats, or other fruits.

The filled fruit can be cooked further so the flavor of the filling permeates the flesh of the breadfruit..

*INTRODUCING THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DATES*

*ABOUT DATES*

Dates are good source of energy, sugar, and fiber. Essential minerals such as calcium, iron, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium,
and zinc can be found in them. They also contain vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, vitamin A, and vitamin K.

*BENEFITS OF DATES*

1.RELIEF CONSTIPATION:

Dates are often categorized as a laxative food. This is why they are so frequently eaten by people suffering from constipation. In order to achieve the desired laxative effect of dates, soak some of them in water overnight, then consume in the morning when they turn into a syrup to get the most optimal results. They have high levels of soluble fiber, which is essential in promoting healthy bowel movements and comfortable passage of food through the intestinal tract, which can relieve the symptoms of constipation.

2. STRENGTHENS BONES .

The significant amounts of minerals found in dates make them a superfood for strengthening bones and fighting off painful and debilitating diseases like osteoporosis. These dry fruits contain selenium, manganese, copper, and magnesium, all of which are integral to healthy bone development and strength, particularly as people age, their bones gradually weaken. So eat dates and give a boost to your bones.

3. TREAT INTESTINAL DISORDERS.

The nicotine content in dates is thought to be beneficial for curing many kinds of intestinal disorders. Continuous intake helps inhibit the growth of the pathological organisms and thus, they help stimulate the growth of friendly bacteria in the intestines. In terms of digestive issues, they contain insoluble and soluble fibers, as well as many beneficial amino acids which can stimulate the digestion of food and make them more efficient, meaning that more nutrients will be absorbed by the digestive tract and enter your body for proper usage.

4.TREATS ANEMIA .

Dates have a high mineral content, which is beneficial for many different health conditions but their impressive levels of iron make them a perfect dietary supplement for people suffering from anemia. The high level of iron in dates balances out the inherent lack of iron in anemic patients, increasing energy and strength while decreasing feelings of fatigue and sluggishness.

5.CURES ALLERGIES.

One of the most interesting facets of dates is the presence of organic sulfur in them. This is not a very common element to find in foods, but it does have a worthwhile amount of health benefits, including the reduction of allergic reactions and seasonal allergies. According to a study done in 2002, organic sulfur compounds can have a positive impact on the amount of suffering people experience from SAR (Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis), which affects approximately 23 million people in the United States alone. They are a great way to stem the effects of those seasonal allergies through their contributions of sulfur to the diet.

6.PROMOTE WEIGHT GAIN.

Dates should be included as a part of a healthy diet. They consist of sugar, proteins, and many essential vitamins. If dates are consumed with cucumber paste, you can keep your weight at a normal, balanced level, rather than over-slimming. One kilogram of dates contains almost 3,000 calories, and the calories in them are sufficient to meet the daily requirements for a human body. Of course, you should not eat just dates throughout the day. If you are thin and slim and want to increase your weight, or if you are trying to build your muscles to impress, or you have become weak due to a serious medical problem you need to eat dates.

7.BOOOST ENERGY.

The date fruit contains many nutrients that help boost your energy levels. It also contains natural sugars like sucrose, fructose, and glucose – all of which offer an energy boost.

8.MAINTAINS NERVOUS SYSTEMS HEALTH.

The vitamins present in dates make it an ideal boost to nervous system health and functionality. Potassium is one of the prime ingredients in promoting a healthy and responsive nervous system, and it also improves the speed and alertness of brain activity. Therefore, they are a wonderful food source for people as they age and their nervous system becomes sluggish or unsupported, as well as for people who want to keep their mind sharp.

9.PROMOTE HEART HEALTH .

Dates are quite helpful in keeping your heart healthy. When they are soaked overnight, crushed in the morning and then consumed, they have been shown to have a positive effect on weak hearts. They are also a rich source of potassium, which studies have shown to reduce the risk of stroke and other heart-related diseases. Furthermore, they are suggested as a healthy and delicious way to reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol in the body, which is a major contributing factor to heart attacks and stroke. Therefore, when taken twice a week, dates can seriously improve the overall health of the heart

10. HELP REGULATE CHOLESTEROLS.

One of the effective dates benefits. According to one Israeli study, intake of dates, even by healthy individuals, can have beneficial effects on cholesterol levels and oxidative stress.

Dates contain no cholesterol. They are also rich in iron and have more fiber than bananas.
