President Muhammadu Buhari’s return to Nigeria on Friday, March 10, 2017, following a 50-day medical vacation in the United Kingdom may have stalled intense lobby for the position of a new vice president in the event of the president’s demise.

Multiple sources with intimate knowledge of the matter told The Trent, this week, there has been an intense lobby for a new vice president to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo who is likely to become president “if the worst happens” to ailing President Buhari.

According to our sources, political power brokers within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, are already putting in place a contingency plan and considering a list of likely candidates for the second highest office in the land.

The top contenders in the list of candidates for vice president (listed in order of preference) are:

1. Muhammadu Sanusi II, Emir of Kano

2. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Sokoto State Governor

3. Nasir El-Rufai, Kaduna State Governor

4. Bukola Saraki, President of the Senate

5. Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Former EFCC Chairman

HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II

By far the most interesting choice of shortlisted candidates, the former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN governor and current Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II is said to have joined the intense lobby for vice president.

According to the sources, Sanusi’s emirate will not stop his ambition as he has perfected plans to abdicate if he is ratified for the number two job.

Sanusi, already testing the waters, paid a visit last month to Aso Rock for a meeting with Osinbajo during Buhari’s sick leave. He declined to speak to journalists on the purpose of his visit to the Presidential Villa at the end of the meeting. The emir simply told State House correspondents, “You can just report that I came to the Villa.”

The emir, an inside source revealed, has taken steps to strengthen his candidacy by becoming more visible in the media of recent and making comments that would appeal to the a national audience, for example, his recent comments on educating the girl child, replacing mosques with schools, and restrictions on polygamy for poor Muslim men.

“Essentially, what you have heard Sanusi say in recent times would irk his Muslim fundamentalist base but appeals to Christians and moderate Muslims,” one source said.

Sanusi’s biggest challenges are his antecedents as CBN governor and his perception as a hot-headed fundamentalist raise serious concerns about the Islamisation of Nigeria if he becomes vice president or by any ‘act of God’ rides on to become president.

Security reports on the emir, dating back to General Sani Abacha days implicate him in the December 1994 murder of an Igbo trader, Gideon Akaluka, who was kidnapped from a police cell by a Muslim mob and beheaded for allegedly desecrating the Quran, a charge that was eventually found to be false.

The possibility of a Muslim fundamentalist with such a track record is reportedly making the Donald Trump White House uncomfortable.

Another fallacy from the stable of wailers and enemies of Nigeria. Insha Allah nothing will happen to Sai Baba. All the wolves loitering around Aso Rock should go and sit down.

Sai Baba till 2023.

In other words, those who wish Baba to go other ways round were visible in Aso rock. What is Emir Sanusi looking for? I thought his present position is for life and he can't leave that thrown except he is been dispose by concerned Authority. The Northerner are more harmful to each others when it comes to power

How come do we youths keep on watching these old men recycle themselves in politics?

I read a post earlier about President Buhari saying that the success of VP Osinbanjo is due to his youthfulness and I ask, how can you describe a 60 year old as been youthful? not to even talk of Baba himself.

If you can't appoint a 70 year old to run your business for you, then I don't see the reason why we have to allow these old men run the country for we the youth.

Some people will come and say Trump is 70+ and is President of the US but they are already established and developed.

These men are just there to secure the future of their generation and don't care about us one bit.

2019 is around the corner.
We have to be wise please.

Honestly, people should not be surprised to wake up one of these days and hear that Buhari has resigned.
There are likely planning and strategising the way forward.
From Buhari's recent comments about his VP, Osinbajo, he is likely ready to hand over the mantle of leadership to him.
The deal might likely be that the supposed VP to Osinbajo will be projected for president come2019.
And guess what, Buhari will only select loyalists for the job as mentioned by the Op.
People like Atiku and Kwankwaso will likely look for alternative platforms to run for the presidency come 2019.
Anything can happen between now and 2019.
Let's watch out.

The problem isn't with the 70year olds but with us the youths...u dnt believe me? Jst find one politically topical thread on Nairaland and instead of seeing objectivity and intellectualism from youths all you wl get wl b emotionalism, bigotry and plain crass stupidity and we want power! This is by the way!

There's a youthful Governor (Youngest governor presently) in Kogi state who is screening civil servants for a year plus now and nothin tangible is done in the state. He is busy sharing exotic cars here and there!

There is a youthful sports minister that is busy parading like a cultist!

There was a youthful Bankole who sold his political career for 20 billion naira!

So you see wen folks like u say wat u say I jst laf eventhough i wish there is a change in the status quo but unfortunately the more things change the more they seem to remain the same in Nigeria!
