Millions of people in Nigeria die due to preventable diseases every year. Sedentary lifestyle, improper eating habits, and excessive consumption of alcohol are some of the leading reasons behind the increasing prevalence of deadly diseases in Nigeria. Studies reveal that most of the life-threatening diseases troubling Nigerian population go unrecognized in their initial stage. Lack of healthcare professionals, poor medical treatments and facilities are the dominant factors responsible for this condition. The following list elaborates the top causes of death in Nigeria.

HIV/AIDS - This fatal disease affects nearly 4 million people in Nigeria. According to recent reports, Nigeria stands second among HIV-affected nations across the world. Lack of sex-education and unprotected sex are the main culprits behind steadily rising cases of HIV/AIDS patients in Nigeria.

Cardiovascular Diseases - Nigerian people are battling a massive number of cardiovascular diseases. Healthcare studies depict that rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease, heart failure, and stroke results in majority of death in Nigeria. Heart diseases can be prevented to a great extent by following a healthy routine and active lifestyle.

Cancer - Cancer disease is killing Nigerian population at an alarming rate. Most of the patients in Nigeria are struggling from prostate, lung, liver, breast and cervical cancer. Approximately 54,000 people in Nigeria die due to cancer every year. Global Medical professionals state that improper diagnosis of underlying disease contributes to majority of cancer-related deaths in Nigeria.

Epilepsy - Prevalence of epilepsy in Nigeria is quite high. This chronic neurological disorder kills nearly 20,000 patients every year. Root cause of this disease is still unidentified. However, excessive alcohol intake, stress, drug abuse, and unhealthy food choices are known as the trigger points for epileptic seizures. Episodes of epileptic seizures can be efficiently controlled by avoiding these habits.

Diabetes - Also touted as ‘silent killer’, diabetes adversely impacts a large population of Nigeria. In fact, Nigeria has the highest death ratio among African countries due to diabetes. Diabetes causes 32,000 deaths in Nigeria on an annual basis. Diabetes is a highly preventable disease. Intake of fiber rich diet, fresh vegetables, and fruits can significantly manage the blood sugar level of patients. Apart from this, regular exercising routine can also help the patients to beat diabetes.

Malaria - This disease is responsible for around 10 % of the total deaths in Nigeria. Lack of awareness, poor diagnosis, and improper healthcare provisions causes most of the malarial deaths in Nigeria.

Tuberculosis - This life-threatening infectious disease kills around 5 % of patients in Nigeria. It killed 20,000 children in Nigeria last year. Tobacco consumption and drug abuse are the most common factors which lead Nigerian people to tuberculosis.

Kidney Diseases - According to a latest research, approximately 17,000 patients in Nigeria died from severe kidney disease in the year 2016. This death ratio is expected to rise in upcoming years. Several conditions like heart attack, infection, and scarring of liver are said to be the contributing factors for kidney diseases among Nigerian population.

These are some of the leading causes of deaths in Nigeria. Prompt diagnosis and quality medical treatments are necessary to minimize these problems. However, Nigeria does not have strong medical care system. Statistics estimate that only 1 medical care provider per 3000 patients is available in Nigeria. But in today’s era, patients can avail online medical consultation with merely a click of button. It can help save lives of many patients in Nigeria and improve their quality of life.

disease is secondary the primary killer that have rise to this is "poverty". the average Nigerian is trying to survive every day, with harsh government conditions. why wouldnt sickness be on the rise. then if you want to relax by having sex. you will get HIV. let's face it. one day, Nigeria itself will be a disease.
