In Trunyan, an ancient village in Bali, Indonesia, deceased bodies are not buried or burned, but left to rot under a tree.



Deep in the wilds of Bali, at the foot of a volcano, exists a community with a curious ancient death ritual.



When someone dies in Trunyan, a mountain village on the eastern shore of Lake Batur, their body isn't buried or cremated, it's placed in a bamboo cage alongside a row of ten others and left to decompose.

Once all the flesh has disintegrated under the smothering Indonesian heat, the skull is removed from the rest of the skeleton and placed on a stone altar underneath a sacred tree, where it becomes another building block of the shrine.

Only men are permitted to go there and deliver the bodies after the preparation ritual which involves cleaning the corpse with rain water and wrapping it in cloth, leaving the head uncovered.

It is believed that if women venture to the cemetery, the village will be struck by an earthquake or volcanic eruption.


Trunyan Cemetery, pictured, where the bamboo cages sit, is close to the village but accessible only by boat across Lake Batur.

It's the only region in Bali where this ceremony takes place, and only those who were married, such as this woman was when she died, are entitled to the honour.
The bodies of the unwed are simply buried instead.

The bamboo cages, pictured, are arranged under a Taru Menyan tree, a special species which emits a pleasant scent that is said to neutralise the smell of rotting.

The bamboo cages protect the dead bodies from animals.


When all the cages are full of bodies, the one which has been there longest is removed to make room for the next, and placed on a pile.
