Ishilove:

Why keep such planes? Why not butcher them and use them for spare parts as we do here in Nigeria?

They are a valuable source of spare parts, and when all that can be used has been removed, the rest of the fuselage is sold as scrap, for recycling into beer cans or other aluminium products.

Military aircraft cover several square miles of that scrapyard, and many of those can be refurbished, fitted with new engines and returned to combat duties, IF the air-frames are NOT deemed to have suffered metal fatigue at the point in time when they are needed.

They seem to be rusting away in these yards without any use.

Thanks for the education.

The air is EXTREMELY dry, year round, in that specially chosen location for the aircraft graveyard in Arizona, so the process of corrosion is drastically slowed down.

If two identical aircraft were placed outdoors in a comparison test, with one in the desert, and the other say at Lagos Airport, the one in the humid air of Lagos, would be reduced to a corroded hulk in a fraction of the time it would take for the aircraft parked in the desert, to show any sign of corrosion at all.

This is the primary difference between that Arizona aircraft graveyard on one hand, where the systematic recycling of parts and entire air-frames is routinely carried out, and the smaller number of written-off planes littering Nigerian airports on the other hand, where NONE would ever be suitable for re-use in any manner, due to accelerated corrosion and rust.

Trump is 75 years old, and he is plotting a new narrative for the future of America. Stealing and corruption has nothing to do with age, it's a culture in Nigeria. There are relatively young men and women in the senate who are part of the culture of stealing. I would rather have an incorruptible old leader than a corrupt young buffoon.

Thank you. Sometimes I wonder if it is the current crop of drug addicts and cultists that we call youth that can lead us. See if by mistake power enters the hand of any of the aforementioned kinds of youth ehn? Buhari's rule compared to theirs will be an uhuru

It will be better put to use in the university research centres. Let them be donated to university for them to study aircraft gas turbine and avionics

We all know things have gone horribly wrong in the last 3 decades, but what's our generation doing with the vast amount of knowledge we have now? Complain, support the same set politicians that put us in this predicament, lament without proffering solution, abuse other tribes, waste valuable time on social media on subject with absolute no national interest, joke about serious issues, get involved in get rich quick scheme, continue suffering and smiling etc.

Everybody is feeling emotional on this thread about how the aviation sector in Nigeria is abysmal. How could a country of almost 200 million people, the most populous black country in the world, the country with one of the most travelled citizens in the world not have a national carrier? If you ask Nigeria youth what they think the solution is, they start flexing muscle on which tribe is better than which, or start singing praises of the same politicians that ruined everything.

Until Nigeria youth start thinking of how to make this country great by their actions, we will continue crying, and things will continue to get worse.

Open a thread n ask them which phone is better, xiomi or tecno..n watch how they rush in giving different answer n solution.

This is an example of why investing in rail is important. Rail cars last up to 50 years and use a fraction of the energy.

Nigeria Airways Ltd., more commonly known asNigeria Airways, was a Nigerian airline.

The company was founded in 1958 after the dissolution of West African Airways Corporation.

It was wholly owned by the Government of Nigeria, and served as the country's flag carrier until it ceased operations in 2003.

The airline was managed by a number of foreign companies, including British Airways, KLM and South African Airways.

It had its heyday in the early 1980s, just after a KLM team two-year-management period; at that time its fleet comprised about 30 aircraft.

The airline's operations were concentrated at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Plagued by mis-management, corruption, and overstaffing, at the time of closure the airline had debts of more than US$60,000,000(equivalent to $78,115,051 in 2016), a poor safety record, and its operative fleet comprised a single aircraft flying domestic routes as well as two leased aircraft operating the international network.
Nostalgic... I'm remembering
my first Nigeria Airways DC10
flight to Lagos in 1980. wink
