You have seriously thought about or are thinking of getting that new car. It looks great and you will be the cynosure of all eyes when you take a drive in it. The odometer has lots of zeros in it and you are feeling immune to breakdowns, at least for a couple of years. That new car smell seems irresistible to you too. You are also tired of spending most of your weekends fixing your previous car at a roadside mechanic's.

Well, all that glitters isn't gold. Here are some downsides of getting a new car in Nigeria.

1. Price

No gainsaying, new cars can be really pricey. If you got the cash, ride on.

Regarding spares, you may be restricted to new ones which can be very pricey due to the unavailability of used parts on the market as a result of car being new.

Furthermore, dealer service fees can be extremely high.

2. Depreciation

Once you drive that new car off the dealer lot, its value can drop by as much as 30 percent.

3. Features and Specifications

From my personal experience, the average new car sold in Nigeria has fewer standard features compared to those found in other countries, such as USA. I won't mention any brands. You can carry out your research online and visit a Nigerian dealer to know what is on offer.

Examples of items to look out for include safety systems (such as number of airbags, belt tensioners, ABS, Brake assist, traction control, etc.), engine capacity or displacement, alloy wheels, moonroof, trip computer, entertainment systems, emissions systems, etc.

4. Warranty

According to Google, warranty means a written guarantee, issued to the purchaser of an article by its manufacturer, promising to repair or replace it if necessary within a specified period of time.

In Nigeria, this process can be very lengthy and usually ends up being a bitter experience for most people. If the issue is really serious and the car is unusable, you are not likely to be provided with a replacement vehicle pending when your car gets repaired or replaced.

Also, new car owners can be coerced into paying for repairs to speed up the process of getting their cars back on the road.

5. Time-consuming routine maintenance / service

It is not uncommon to spend up to 4 hours for a routine oil-change at the dealer's. The new car owner is usually left without a car during this time. Owners are left with no other option due to fear of voiding their warranties.

6. Sloppy service

Uncommon issues can be left unsolved with very flimsy excuses and after lengthy periods. This can be extremely frustrating , especially if large amounts of money have been obtained from the new car owner. At times, the gullibility of the new car owner is taken advantage of by the technicians.

7. Public security

In Nigeria, cars can be seen as a measure of success. Buying a new car can easily send a public message that owner is extremely rich. This may lead to visits from men of the underworld or abduction for ransom.

8. Hazardous roads and other conditions

It is no news that most Nigerian roads are bad and hazardous. Damage to your new car may be uncovered by insurance and warranty.

Also, your new car may be damaged by a rickety vehicle and it may take months for your insurance claim to go through.

9. Neglected Recalls

Occasionally, car manufacturers recall their cars to fix some manufacturing defects. New car owners in Nigeria are usually left out of this exercise.

10. Increased Anxiety levels

A new car can lead to higher levels of anxiety. This can arise due to fear of something bad happening to that new "baby".

***bonus***

A new car can increase advances from ladies towards both single and married guys. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

I am not saying it is better. Just saying it isn't all a bed of roses.

The only advantage a used car has over a brand new car is price. Nothing else. If u think ur car is spending longer hours at the dealership then take it to another shop for service even if it voids ur warrantee. And majority of people that buy new cars have more than 1 car anyway.
