Bahamas 2017: SuperSand Eagles battle Italy in opener


SuperSand Eagles will on Thursday return to the world stage when they file out against Italy in one of the opening games at the Beach Soccer World Cup in Bahamas.

The Nigerian side, which will be challenging Iran, Italy and Mexico for a place in Group B of the tournament, missed the last edition of the tournament after losing to Senegal in the semi finals in Seychelles.

SuperSand Eagles’ skipper, Isiaka Olawale, however believes the Nigerian side will qualify for the knockout stage of the competition.
“All the teams we will be facing are very, very good teams,” Olawale said. “However, and I say that with the utmost of respect to our opponents, we don’t have to overestimate anybody.

“We will take each match as it comes. But we will try our very best. We have to be at our best if we want to make it through to the next round. We have faced some of the teams before and we know that any team that has qualified for the World Cup deserves to be there.”
Bahamas 2017 will be the fourth time that Olawale competes in the showpiece event of beach soccer, having been in the Nigerian team at the 2007 finals in Brazil, the 2009 edition in the United Arab Emirates and the last time the Super Sand Eagles made it through in 2011, when Italy hosted the tournament.

On the other hand, Italy have yet to lift the trophy, their proven ability to go deep into the tournament makes them a force to be reckoned with, especially with the free-scoring Gabriele Gori leading their attack.
The tie is slated to kick off at 3:30pm at the National Beach Soccer Arena on Thursday

With the home crowd behind them, Nigeria embarked on their 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations campaign on 13 December last year with high hopes of capturing the trophy and drawing level with Senegal as the competition's most decorated team. Despite being beaten 3-1 on penalties by Côte d'Ivoire (4-4 aet) in the group stage, they advanced to the semi-finals courtesy of narrow wins over Egypt (3-2) and Ghana (4-3). They then swept past Morocco 6-1 in the last four to clinch a berth at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017. However, there was to be no fairy-tale ending for the hosts, who were powerless to prevent Senegal securing a fourth crown with an 8-4 victory in the final on 18 December, a result that cemented the Lions of Teranga's position as Africa's champions on the sand.

Strengths and style
Nigeria have ended a six-year spell in the Beach Soccer World Cup wilderness in large part thanks to the brilliance of Emeka Ogbonna, who collected the Most Valuable Player award at the qualifying event. He was undoubtedly the most influential figure behind his side's successful showing at the tournament, popping up with no fewer than six goals and tipping the balance in the Super Sand Eagles' favour at crunch moments. Honourable mentions also go to forward Isiaka Olawale and defender Victor Tale, who made key contributions.

FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup record
Nigeria have taken part in four editions of the Beach Soccer World Cup, all from 2006 to 2011, a period when they only missed out on Marseille 2008. Their best performances came at Rio de Janeiro 2007 and Ravenna/Italy 2011, when they progressed from the group stage before succumbing to Uruguay and Brazil respectively in the quarter-finals. The Nigerians failed to qualify for either Tahiti 2013 or Portugal 2015.

Italy went unbeaten in the two group phases of the European qualifiers, held on home sand, scoring 34 goals in the process and conceding 19. In the semi-final, and with their place at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 already secure, the hosts played out a 2-2 draw with eventual champions Poland in normal time before going down to a Piotr Klepczarek strike in extra time. The Italians then missed out on third place, losing 8-3 to Portugal.

Strengths and style
Italy’s main virtues lie in attack, with Gabriele Gori leading the way in the European qualifiers with 19 goals, a tally bettered only by Switzerland’s Dejan Stankovic. Though the Azzurra shipped 31 goals in the competition, their understanding at the other end of the pitch makes them a threat to anyone and contenders for what would be their first-ever beach soccer world title.

After missing out on a place at Rio de Janeiro 2005, Italy went to Brazil the following year with hopes high, only to fall at the first hurdle after losing all three of their group matches. Their performance at Marseille 2008 was near perfect, as they advanced to the final before losing 5-3 to Brazil, who ended their hopes again at Dubai 2009, this time in the quarter-finals. The Italians went out at the same stage on hosting the tournament in Ravenna two years later, when El Salvador were their conquerors. After failing to qualify for Tahiti 2013, the Azzurra returned to the global stage at Portugal 2015, where they advanced to the last four. Beaten by Tahiti in the semis, they then went down to Russia in the match for third place
