The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has revealed that $3.2m ( N1.08bn) worth of HIV drugs expired in storage.

Adewole said this while delivering a speech at the ‘Dissemination Meeting of 2016 National Health Facility Survey’ in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said clinical competence and knowledge of healthcare workers, availability of drugs and basic equipment, and management and supervision of healthcare facilities were essential to the improvement of the health sector.

The minister said, “ Availability of commodities is also important. We have mentioned inadequate funding which is a major factor but it is not the only reason for the out of stock of commodities. Better management is also important.

“ We are living witnesses to the challenges we face with the HIV programme where drugs worth about $3. 2m expired. So, it is not a question of it ( drugs) not being available. Sometimes the drugs are there but we don’ t give it to them ( patients) and then they expire . ”

Speaking with our correspondent after the event , the minister said the incident would not repeat itself as mechanisms had been put in place to forestall such.

Adewole added, “ The issue is that the drugs expired because of some challenges in the system and we are trying to putting that behind us. We are now putting together a network of logistics supply system . We have two excellent facilities in Abuja and Lagos which we call ‘Warehouse in a Box ’.

“ The one in Abuja is called Premium Medical Supplies Store and everything there is computerised and with that kind of system, there will be no more expired drugs because we will be able to monitor them electronically. It will be a system of first in, first out and we will also be monitoring expiry dates.

“ What we are also trying to avoid in the country is a situation where we take drugs that are about to expire . When you pick drugs that have short shelf lives like six months, they can expire easily. ”

Meanwhile, Adewole has said putting money in the health sector is not expenditure but an investment that will yield dividends.

He said this at National Stakeholders Validation Meeting of the second National Strategic Health Development Plan framework which was attended by health commissioners from the 36 states of the federation.

Adewole said there was a sense of urgency for governments at all levels, particularly the state governments to have the political will to place high premium on budget financing for health because, over time, budget for health was grossly inadequate.

He said, “ Health is an investment issue, health is security and, above all, health is a human right issue , the right to health should not deny anyone. ”

The minister said that the Federal Government was working with the state governments to revitalise the primary healthcare centres , adding that ailments like malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV /AIDS were better treated at the primary health care level.

HIV drugs worth millions of dollars expires in storage. What a shame and a waste. and gross incompetence, considering that patients go through the mill just to gain access to these drugs; and others have died just because they couldn't access the drugs.

This is coming from an health minister that is supposed to bury his head in shame. What stopped them from distributing the drugs before they expired? Selfish bastards hoarding HIV medications for their personal gains now it is all wasted. It will never be well with some people.

Nigeria is a special kind of wicked place ..Nigerian Doctors and pharmacist turned free HIV drugs into business where they expect those who the drugs were donated for to pay upto 45,000 monthly to gain access to the drugs ..Many who couldn't afford to pay the extortionist were left to die ...We always shudder when we hear someone beheaded another for money rituals but in reality 70 percent of Nigerian professionals are also money ritualist

The reason why the drugs were left to waste is because under both international and local laws, it is a crime to sell HIV medication. The WHO in conjunction with USAID provides these drugs to various countries and the drugs are funded by the government of the host country where it is delivered to. In this case, the $3.2m which was allocated and paid for these drugs hs been wasted simply because we have a shameless minister who shamelessly came out to admit the waste and a failed system that couldn't coordinate manpower to effectively distribute these drugs nationwide.

So you see, even living with HIV in Nigeria now is a problem in the sense that you cannot access free HIV medication. But that can only be a problem if you do not know HIV IS TOTALLY CURABLE.

Gross irresponsibility of the minister and his cohorts.

After they will come and tell us its because the previous government didn't do this or that well as all the things the like to take credit for were all built by the previous government.

The part that people should now watch out for is that part where they now repackage those drugs and stamp new expiry dates on them and start selling to the patients

Did he say it happened when he became a minister? Do you think he would have come out to make such a statement if this happened under his watch?
We just always like to blame in every area of our national life whether wrongly or rightly like we get paid for it.

The problem with this country is greed. If those in charge have the opportunity of making doulbe the cost of those drugs into their private purse, trust me it wont waste.

You wonder why the locomotive train scraps are still available in the country despite interests from different quarters to buy it off.....Greed!
