Declassification Of Aburi Accord Document(s) by Amoto94(m): 9:41am On May 30, 2017
As we celebrate the anniversary of Nigerian Civil war that lasted for months and claimed the lives of prominent sons and daughters of Nigeria, one of the events that transpired before the war was the signing of Aburi Accord in Ghana by Gowon and Ojukwu.

Afterwards Ojukwu declared Biafran Republic which led to the war that lasted months. To this day most Nigerians past and present are not privy to this document and this has led to the spread of misinformation and calculated propaganda from elements who seek to cause upheaval and chaos.

On this note I call on Nigerians to demand for the declassification of the said accord to set the records straight so that we can put this matter to a rest.

Reportedly, the accord was as follows:

1. Members agree that the legislative and executive authority of the Federal Military Government should remain in the Supreme Military Council, to which any decision affecting the whole country shall be referred for determination provided that where it is possible for a meeting to be held the matter requiring determination must be referred to military governors for their comment and concurrence.

2. Specifically, the council agreed that appointments to senior ranks in the police, diplomatic, and consular services as well as appointment to superscale posts in the federal civil service and the equivalent posts in the statutory corporation must be approved by the Supreme Military Council.

3. The regional members felt that all the decrees passed since January 15, 1966, and which detracted from previous powers and positions of regional governments, should be repealed if mutual confidence is to be restored.

I believe the breakdown of the accord might have been on the basis of implementing No. 3 which the SMC might have not been too excited about. Ojukwu himself and his eastern delegates might have not been too happy with No.'s 1 & 2.

A declassification would clarify speculations; though I think its way overdue for us to move on.

In one of Ojukwu's interviews, he said it was because Nigeria reneged on Aburi Accord that he released the audio copy.

Amoto94, great thread.

In my opinion, it's not just about the declassification of the Aburi Accord. There is a wider issue here, which is the lack of history being taught in schools right from the start. The result is different versions of the same historical event flying about. In addition, people need to know their past leaders, what they stood for whilst in power, what they achieved or did not. People need to know the origins of different tribes and what their values are. There is so much not being done in Nigeria. People who do not know their history are bound to repeat it.
