Stuart Baxter has named his first squad since returning as head coach of Bafana Bafana.

Bafana will travel to Uyo to take on Nigeria in their opening match of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on June 10.

Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Darren Keet returns to the squad for the first time since the 2015 Afcon in Equatorial Guinea.

Mamelodi Sundowns five representatives in the squad, while there four players from Kaizer Chiefs in Itumeleng Khune, Lorenzo Gordinho, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Eric Mathoho.

Bongani Zungu makes a return to the national team alongside Andile Jali, Keagan Dolly and Kamohelo Mokotjo.

Aerial strength was the major priority for Baxter as he admits they tried to spread it around the team to put on a good showing against the Super Eagles.

"I'm pleased with the squad we have assembled. We have a small element of development with a couple of young players. We also have some players who are returning to the squad like Zungu and Rantie. We have players who have been outstanding in the PSL the whole season. We also have continuity with a number of players that Safa has invested much time in and we have them in the team. I believe we have a good mix," Baxter told the media.

"We have also looked at aerial strength and tried to spread that well throughout the team. It means if we can have good preparation before we go, then we have a squad that is capable of giving Nigeria a good game," Baxter said.

Full Squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Ronwen Williams, Darren Keet.

Defenders: Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Rivaldo Coetzee, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Eric Mathoho, Lorenzo Gordinho, Abbubaker Mobara, Tebogo Langerman, Sifiso Hlanti.

Midfielders: Hlompho Kekana, Keagan Dolly, Andile Jali, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Dean Furman, Themba Zwane, Bongani Zungu, Aubrey Ngoma.

Strikers: Sibusiso Vilakazi, Percy Tau, Lebogang Manyama, Tokelo Rantie, Thamsanqa Gabuza, Kermit Erasmus.

Eagles must contain Furman to win

Nigeria kick off their quest for a berth in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday in Uyo after failing to make it to the last two editions, in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Sacrilege for the west Africans considering how football crazy the country is and that they have appeared in 17 previous competitions and five World Cups.

Facing them will be Bafana Bafana, ranked 11th in Africa and 65th in the world and in the past this would probably have prompted a snicker from the Nigerian faithful. After all South Africa have never beaten them in any competitive game and only once in a friendly when most the Eagles big guns were MIA.

Back to back draws have changed all that.

Ironically, the man who led the Bafana charge then, Stuart Baxter, is back in the saddle and hoping to reproduce the magic of November 17, 2004 in Johannesburg. Two of his key players in achieving this will be Itumeleng Khune at goalkeeper and Dean Furman in midfield, both of whom he has already identified as the kind of battlers he needs for the big game.

While Khune’s experience and skill need no explanation, some may raise eye brows at Furman. Certainly not in Nigeria where the mercurial midfielder has always performed amazingly against them. Sure it may have been Rantie who circumvented Enyeama twice on the way to scoring a brace in November 2014, but it was captain Furman who sealed the Bafana middle and turned it into a sticky mouse-trap for the likes of Emenike, Musa, and Ikechukwu Uche, expelling them from the Equatorial Guinea Afcon.

A year later it was Furman again at the Mbombela Stadium who spearheaded the South African defence against Nigeria by playing deeper than normal and again clawing out a 1-1 draw.

Furman is a rugby player in a footballer's body and we say that without any insinuation of being dirty. He plays feisty and isn’t pushed off the ball. His tackles are mostly on point and at six feet he isn’t easily beaten with the lob unless it is weighted perfectly. With Mikel Obi out for Nigeria it will be interesting to see how he fares against the talent-overloaded Nigerian midfield that Rohr is still tinkering with.

Considering that the Sparrow Hawks dominated the Eagles (despite losing 3-0) in their last friendly in ball possession (52 v 48 per cent ) the table is set for an exciting duel as Nigeria are still not playing coherently in this part of the field. Dial up the knob on drama since the Eagle’s Onazi - most likely replacement for Mikel as midfield General, plays with as much temperament as Furman.

Coming Attraction: Sparks will surely fly when Onzai and Furman meet again
Nigeria are about to play three of the biggest games in their modern football history and they come back to back to back. In the first two, against Bafana and then Cameroon for Russia 2018 on 28 August, they must hold serve at home. It's as simple, and yet as difficult, as that.

Up front with his best player Victor Moses out due to toe surgery, Rohr must get his strikers on point and to stop being so wasteful. In addition to his midfield dilemma described above, he must also have his back line step up and continue to be stingy. Sadly for the German, all the good work done so far in this department keeps falling apart each time Balogun picks up another injury and can't dress - as is the case again.

However, most pundits agree that most importantly Rohr must render Furman useless by making him chase the ball right from the opening whistle to the very end, and keep him out of position. This means Nigeria must stretch the game and find a way to use their speed not just to reach the South African 18, but then pepper Khune with grass-cutting screamers.

The game is set for Saturday, June 10 at 6pm CAT and will be live on SuperSport . With the west African Monsoon season now in full bloom, there is a high probability of rain.

Stuart Baxter wants Bafana Bafana to be Nigeria’s nightmare:

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter is in buoyant mood ahead of his side’s African Nations Cup qualifier against Nigeria on Sunday.

The Brit held a press conference on Monday ahead of his side’s departure to Uyo, where he named Thulani Hlatshwayo as the new captain, while also highlighting a long list on injury woes in his side.

Despite the numerous number of knocks, Baxter feels there are no excuses not to get the job done against the Super Eagles.

“I would have loved to have a full fit squad ahead of travelling to Nigeria, but you don’t get a perfect situation in football,” he said. “But there are no excuses and we are raring to go. Those called up are true professionals and should raise their hands.”

Baxter is fully aware of the task at hand, but is in confident mood, insisting he will set up his side to frustrate the Nigerians in their own back yard.

“We need a positive result in Nigeria and we have capabilities to hurt them,” he said. “When we get there, we should be ready. There is no perfect world but I have positive belief.

“We are going to be a big nuisance to them; we want to be a nightmare they don’t want. I respect Nigeria but we are not going there to make up the numbers.”

Kick off in Uyo is set for 18h00 South African time.

Eagles opponent South Africa to arrive Nigeria on Wednesday

The South African Football Association have confirmed that the Bafana Bafana delegation will fly into Lagos on Wednesday and then immediately connect a flight to Uyo, as both teams looked forward to a pulsating game on the turf of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Although the Bafana Bafana have never beaten the Super Eagles in a competitive game, Nigerians would remember that a 2-2 draw at the same venue between both teams in November 2014 meant the Eagles missed the cut for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Tokelo Rantie scored both goals, before left –sided midfielder Sone Aluko also replied with a brace – something that is a usual occurrence in matches between both nations.

Before Rantie and Aluko, Rashidi Yekini (of blessed memory), pacy wingers Tijani Babangida and Osaze Odemwingie and forwards Uche Nwofor and Ejike Uzoenyi had bagged braces in matches between both nations at senior level.

Nigeria’s army on Saturday will include former junior international Kelechi Iheanacho, who has scored in seven of his last eight matches for the Super Eagles, as well as record scorer in the FIFA U17 World Cup, Victor Osimhen. There are also this season’s top scorer in the Austrian Bundesliga, Olanrewaju Kayode, the pacy Moses Simon and the nimble –footed Alex Iwobi.

The last outing between both teams was a friendly match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit two years ago, which ended 1-1. Ahmed Musa scored a late goal in a game in which Daniel Akpeyi (likely to start in goal for Nigeria on Saturday) saved a penalty, but there was still time for the Bafana Bafana to draw level.

NIGERIA 7 – 1 SOUTH AFRICA: Eagles Dominate As Bafana Seek First Competitive Match Win In 2019 AFCON Qualifier

Nigeria will host South Africa on matchday-one of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Uyo on Saturday, June 10, 2019.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria‎ are in Group E, along with Libya, Seychelles and South Africa in the qualifiers for the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Cameroun in 2019.

Ahead of the game, Completesportsnigeria.com's JAMES AGBEREBI takes a look at how the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana have fared in previous encounters. The Eagles have won seven of their 12 matches in all competitions. Bafana Bafana have won one, while four matches ended in draws.

NIGERIA 4-0 SOUTH AFRICA (1994 World Cup Qualifier, 1st leg, 1st Round, Group D: 1992)

Nigeria's first ever meeting with South Africa was in 1992 during the qualifiers for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States of America.

Drawn in Group D, Nigeria were actually supposed to meet Sao Tome and Principe, Libya and Congo Brazzaville. But South Africa replaced Sao Tome who withdrew from the qualifiers, while Libya also pulled out.

And on matchday one of the qualifiers, Nigeria hosted South Africa at the National Stadium in Lagos and thrashed them 4-0, thanks to goals from Richard Owobokiri, Samson Siasia and the late Rashidi Yekini (brace).

SOUTH AFRICA 0-0 NIGERIA (1994 World Cup Qualifier, 2nd leg, 1st Round, Group D: 1993)

In the reverse fixture at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, Nigeria forced South Africa to a 0-0 draw.

Rashidi Yekini scored a goal which was controversially ruled out for offside.

Nigeria went on to qualify for the USA 1994 FIFA World Cup after finishing top in a group that also had Cote d'Ivoire and Algeria in the final round of the qualifiers.

NIGERIA 2-0 SOUTH AFRICA (AFCON 2000: Semi-final)

Seven years passed before Nigeria and South Africa met again and this time in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations co-hosted by Ghana and Nigeria.

Two quick first half goals from Tijani Babangida, secured a 2-0 win for Nigeria and passage into the final.

Unfortunately, Nigeria lost 4-3 to Cameroon on penalties in the final after regulation time ended 2-2.

NIGERIA 4-0 SOUTH AFRICA (AFCON 2004: Group Stage)

Nigeria and South Africa crossed paths again at the Africa Cup of Nations, this time in the group stage of the 2004 edition in Tunisia.

After losing 1-0 to Morocco in their first group game, Nigeria needed to beat South Africa in their second game to stand a chance of making it to the quarter-finals.

Just like in their first ever meeting in 1992, Nigeria triumphed 4-0 with the goals coming from Joseph Yobo, Austin Okocha and a brace from Osaze Odemwingie.

SOUTH AFRICA 2-1 NIGERIA (Mandela Challenge, friendly match: 2004)

South Africa recorded their first ever win against Nigeria in the 2004 Mandela Challenge.

Played at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, South Africa won 2-1 with Ayo Makinwa scoring Nigeria's goal.

Other players who featured for Nigeria include Taye Taiwo, Obafemi Martins, Blessing Kaku and Seyi Olofinjana.

NIGERIA 2-0 SOUTH AFRICA (2010 World Cup Qualifier, 1st Leg, Round 2, Group D: 2008)

Despite being the hosts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa took part in the qualifiers. But the Bafana Bafana's involvement in the qualifiers was as a result of it being the qualification for the 2010 AFCON in Angola.

Nigeria hosted South Africa at the Abuja National Stadium on matchday one of the qualifiers and defeated them 2-0.

Ikechukwu Uche and Obinna Nwaneri were the scorers for Nigeria.

SOUTH AFRICA 0-1 NIGERIA (2010 World Cup Qualifier, 2st Leg, Round 2, Group D: 2008)

South Africa hosted Nigeria in the return leg of the qualifiers which was actually a formality game as Nigeria had already qualified for the final stage.

Despite dominating a larger part of the game, Nigeria emerged 1-0 victors thanks to Ikechukwu Uche's goal.

South Africa failed to qualify for the 2010 AFCON, while Nigeria picked both the tickets for the 2010 AFCON and the 2010 World Cup.

SOUTH AFRICA 0-2 NIGERIA (Mandela Challenge, friendly match: 2013)

After winning the 2013 AFCON, Nigeria were guests of South Africa for the Mandela Challenge a few months later.

It was the second time Nigeria will face South Africa in the Mandela Challenge after their first meeting in 2004.

Following a goalless first half, Nigeria went on to win the game 2-0 courtesy a brace from Uche Nwofor.

SOUTH AFRICA 1-3 NIGERIA (2014 CHAN: Group Stage)

The late Stephen Keshi was in charge as Nigeria made her debut at the CHAN hosted by South Africa in 2014.

Nigeria lost 2-1 to Mali in their first group game before beating Mozambique 4-2 in their second game.

Against hosts South Africa in their last group game, Nigeria needed to win to progress into the quarter-finals.

Inside the Cape Town Stadium, Nigeria won 3-1 with goals coming off the boots of Ejike Uzoenyi and Ifeanyi Ede.

South Africa's goal scored by Bernard Parker was the first time they will score against Nigeria in a competitive game.

SOUTH AFRICA 0-0 NIGERIA (2015 AFCON Qualifier, Group A, 1st Leg: 2014)

Nigeria were drawn in Group A with South Africa, Sudan and Congo Brazzaville in the race for the 2015 AFCON in Equatorial Guinea.

Both teams met on matchday two of the qualifiers with the game ending 0-0.

The draw meant Nigeria secured their first point in the group after they lost 3-2 to Congo Brazzaville on matchday one, while South Africa had four points.

NIGERIA 2-2 SOUTH AFRICA (2015 AFCON Qualifier, Group A, 2nd Leg: 2014)

After beating Congo Brazzaville 2-0 away in the penultimate game of the qualifiers, Nigeria needed to beat South Africa in Uyo to qualify for the 2015 AFCON.

But the Super Eagles were held to a surprise 2-2 draw by South Africa who had already finished top of the group.

South Africa raced to a 2-0 lead before Sone Aluko scored two late goals to end the game 2-2.

SOUTH AFRICA 1-1 NIGERIA (International friendly: 2015)

As part of their preparation for the 2015 AFCON, South Africa hosted Nigeria in an international friendly game.

The Bafana Bafana dominated the game but it was Nigeria who took the lead through Ahmed Musa.

But with a few minutes left on the time, South Africa fought back to draw level.

Coach of the Nigerian national team Gernot Rohr has revealed his plans for the Super Eagles and in particular its young players especially VFL Wolfsburgs Teenage Striker Victor Osimhen

The German tactician made these known in an exclusive chat with KweséESPNs top soccer pundit Colin Udoh

The Super Eagles are currently camped in Uyo in preparation for the crucial AFCON qualifier against South Africa after playing friendlies against Corsica and Togo in Paris and the coach has been impressed with what he has seen from his team so far

“Our team is young and has a good future, [but] there is a lot of work to do still,” Rohr told KweséESPNs Colin Udoh.

“And we also had excellent conditions in Paris.”

“Nice pitches and a beautiful stadium where we got to work on two different organizations, 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 and give competitive football to the players who needed it,” he added.

Gernot Rohr who is evidently a fan of youth in his teams defended his continued invitation of Wolfsburgs Victor Osimhen despite criticism from some quarters

“You see what I am trying to do. We must bring him (Osimhen) up slowly to a high level,” He said

Osimhen who was top scorer at the U17 world cup and holds the record for highest number of goals scored in the competition and after an initial delay due to injuries is becoming vital to his German Side Wolfsburg.

Nigeria name Ogenyi Onazi as captain in Mikel’s absence:

Nigeria have named Ogenyi Onazi as captain for their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa this weekend.

The teams will meet in their opening Group E clash in Uyo on Saturday evening.

The Nigerian Football Federation have confirmed that Onazi will wear the armband for the Super Eagles, with regular captain John Obi Mikel missing the match as he recovers from injury.

“I have confidence in the group that we have now and the ambition oozing in the camp. We want to go to the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations,” said Onazi, as quoted by Allnigeriasoccer.com.

“Starting well on Saturday will be key to our aspiration.”

In addition, news coming out of Nigeria training is that locally-based attacking midfielder Alhassan Ibrahim may earn himself a start, while Premier League players Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho have also impressed.

Nice atmosphere. The weather seems cool and the grass on the training pitch is also beautiful.
