Ohanaeze condoles with Igbo in Haiti
From Lawrence Njoku, Enugu

APEX Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed its deepest sympathies for the Igbo in Haiti over the earthquake that claimed over 100,000 persons and property.

http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jan/25/14.html

In a statement issued in Enugu by Chief Nduka Eya and Ralph Ndigwe, Secretary General and National Publicity Secretary respectively, Ohanaeze said that the destruction of economic and social infrastructure in the unfortunate incident had reduced both those directly and indirectly affected to state of lack and insecurity.

Deploring the ordeal of the Haiti, which it said became the world's first black-led republic and the first independent Caribbean state when it threw off French colonial control in a series of wars in the early 19th century, Ohanaeze recalled the great moments of its history as the defeat of Napoleon's army by Toussaint L'Ouverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Henri Christophe and the heroic stand against American Marines in 1915 - 1934, among others.

It said: "We recall the revolution of the poor and the Lavalas under Rev. Fr. Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1990; and the recurrent struggles against storms, hurricanes, earthquakes and untoward historical forces.

"As Ndigbo, our special history with Haiti magnifies back to 1969. When it seemed that the world would remain silent while we died, Haiti became the first country, not only to recognise the injustice visited on us, but to give us support as a means to bring the contending forces to seek genuine peace. That solid support, in the words of their leader, was given to the threatened 'glorious Ibo tribes, descendants of those men who contributed to the founding of the Haitian homeland.'"

They've done something more silly like their condolence message to only Yorubas killed in the North during the 2008 Jos riot.

Ok, I don't know which is more sinister: segregation within your country or outside your country. You need to be up to date with the news before making careless comments.

We Igbos are a very proud people. But we know we are Africans so no need to segregate us. Ethiopians consider themselves Africans as well. They just have enormous pride since they were never colonized which sets them apart from others on the continent.

To my Haitian brothers and sisters, I wish you God's speed. If Africa isn't a weird continent, we would have provided more aid to you. Take heart and wait on God. you remain in our prayers.
Much love.

What is Gods name would an Igbo man be looking for in Haiti. From all the stuff we see on TV there economy and security is not that much better than Nigeria's.

You missed the point. There are Igbo Haitians (slave descendants of Igbo origin), not Igbo immigrants. Take correction.

Thanks for the correction. I'm like why would anyone in his right mind leave Nigeria to go to Haiti.

Besides the Haitian born igbos, there are other Igbos who emigrated to Haiti and I've seen one before who was their attorney general or something close to that . Yes, he is not origina igbo Haitian but emigrated to the country in the 70's. He told me that many Mbasie and Anambra people live there.

He is mbaie man but he told me that they have many Anambra men doing business there. Personally, I've been to Trinidad and Tobago and they have lots of igbo enclaves there and these are original Nigerians who emigrated to T&T. There are many Yoruba men who live in Cuba and these are not Cuban born Yorubas but young men who swam their way to socialism.

If you don't know what Ekiti pupa means, why not ask questions instead of showing sarcasm?. It has nothing to do with Ekiti citizen's Union/parapo. Go home.
