AbdulMutallab: Ministers, Foreigners to Undergo Full-body Scan
From Kingsley Nwezeh and Chinedu Eze in Abuja, 01.27.2010

With Federal Government’s placement of order for full body scanners worth N448 million and their eventual installation at the nation’s airports, both ministers and foreigners including Americans would be subjected to full body scan in view of the recent attempt to bomb an American, airliner on December 25, 2009, by Nigerian-born Farouk Abdulmutallab.

In the same vein, government has embarked on a diplomatic drive with a view to getting Nigeria off the list of nations involved in terrorist activities. In this wise, it is deploying resources to ensure that international aviation standards and best practices are maintained in a renewed bid to curb the trend.

Speaking in Abuja at a ministerial press briefing in response to a question on the privacy implications of the body scanning procedure, Minister of Aviation, Babatunde Omotoba, said the procedure went beyond complaints of invasion of privacy as it was a matter of live and death.

He said in view of the scanning procedure in airports around the world both ministers and foreigners including Americans would be subjected to the same process in Nigerian airports.

“It is easy to say that it is invasion of privacy. If you were in that flight, you will know that in the space of 10 seconds, it was a matter of live and death. Everybody including ministers must be screened. If you are a minister, you will be stripped, you will remove your shoes. There is no difference between what is happening now and in the future.
“The way our people are treated in America is the same way we will treat them here. We will comply with international standards”, he said.

He said Nigeria was working conscientiously to ensure that Nigeria is delisted from terrorist categorisation by the United States. “We are working to ensure that we are removed from that list through diplomacy and maintenance of aviation standards. It is not because of one person that you punish 150 million people”, he said.

He said government had also embarked on recertification of four international airports in the country namely Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt which he said was critical as it would accelerate enhanced comformity of its airports with the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO).

On aviation insurance, he stated that as the body charged with monitoring aviation insurance and non aviation insurance policies in line with ICAO requirements and standard industry practice, $100,000 remained the minimum compensation to be paid on aircraft accident resulting in death and injury.

In view of the above, he said, Bellview Airlines had paid the mandatory $100,000 to the victims of its air crash except one or two cases of multiple claims while ADC Airline insurance has made about 85 per cent payment of undisclosed amount to victims of the ADC accident while the rest are being processed.

“However, the Sosoliso issue is still on. Disbursement of the $2.1 million paid by Sosoliso into an Escrow account for the victims is being finalised with the families”, he said.

This is a good step. Simply subject the Americans to the same treatment Nigerians face at their airports. This is logical and right, after all it is all about airport security and fight against terrorism abi?.

GOOD THING
Its about time we too subjected the americans to full body scanning as well so let them feel the taste of their own medicine.Quite a pity that we treat Americans as Gods when they visit this country but then many nigerians are treated like rubbish by the americans when they visit america and a number of innocent nigerians have been attacked and killed by the american police.

We can afford the world's biggest and largest generators.Scan all Americans. They are not the only one that know how to impose restrictions.

I think it serves them right, tit for tat, it may not remove our name from the list but at least they will be denied of their preferential treatment

Will a Nigerian holding a U.s passport be treated in this retaliatory manner. The other question what is the number of Americans that actually travel into Nigeria i am sure the number is very insignificant

If Nigerians holding US passport are not subject to the scan category, Nigeria will not see a lot of Americans to scan since Americans barely visit Nigeria except Nigerians that lived in American. Nigerian governments are just making fool of themselves. They first gave US ultimate seven days, did not work, they talk about cutting tie with US and those big fat belly knows they will lose and they stope talking about it. May I also say that US do not really care about Nigeria oil anymore because if they do and need the oil badly, they will respect Nigeria but is not happening, and it will not happen in 100 years time.
