Plantain is an important staple and a source of income for many farmers. The fact that, plantain fruits throughout the year add to its importance as a food security crop. However, the productivity and lifespan of plantain has drastically reduced due to lack of proper scientific cultivation practices, inadequate high quality seedlings, pest and disease pressures, etc. These problems are escalating because farmers in Sub Saharan Africa use suckers and corms which in most cases are infested with pests and diseases.

In addressing this major challenge, macropropagation technology was developed by International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan and the African Center for Banana and Plantain Research, Duala. Macropagation technology eliminates sucker-transmitted pests and diseases.

Advantage of macro propagated suckers:-

- few high yielding cultivals can be rapidly multiplied.

-Seedlings will be free from pests and diseases.

-Can expect uniform growth of the plants and increase in crop yield.

-Early maturity of crop can be expected and maximum use of land is possible.

-With macropropagated suckers, farmers can go for round the year plantation as seedlings available throughout the year.

-Two successive ratoons are possible in a short period which will minimize the cost of cultivation.

-With this macro propagation, no staggered harvesting.

-The productivity of the plants are high where 95% to 99% plants can bear bunches.

Kindly call for your macro propagated plantain suckers and free consultancy services on improved techniques of plantain plantation establishment and management .... you would be glad you did .

What IITA and CARBAB say about macropropagated suckers:

" Farmers usually depend on natural regeneration of plantain for the supply of planting materials. This is a very slow process that often produces small numbers of planting materials that are usually contaminated by various soil pathogens such as nematodes and shortens the lifetime of plantation to only one or two cycles of cultivation, beyond which lodging occurs. IITA has developed techniques for the rapid multiplication of healthy planting materials. " IITA Ibadan.

"The cultivation of plantain is underexploited due to the inadequate provision of good quality propagation materials. The negative influence of parasites also leads to the use of poor quality suckers, resulting in growth cycle of only two years. The return on effort put in by farmers is therefore unsatisfactory, leading to further discouragement among plantain growers.
Fortunately, a number of intensive production techniques have been developed, including in vitro cultivation, typically used in research centres and macropropagation using the plantlet from stem fragments." (African Centre for Banana and Plantain Research, Duala Cameron)

Why macropropagated suckers is the preferred suckers among Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire farmers:
- Disease and pest free
- Very long plantation life span
- Rapid and vigorous growth
- Uniformity and synchronized harvest
- Early maturing and huge bunches

People ask, apart from the fact that macropropagated suckers are completely pest and disease free, what other attributes makes it superior to the normal suckers?
The answer is macropropagated suckers are like a miniature adult plantain with well deleveloped shoot ( leaves) and root regions. As a result their plantation establishment is extremely fast as their roots start assimilating nutrient from the soil and their leaves start photosynthesising from the get go.

How we ensure our Suckers are pest and disease free:

1. Corms are only selected from healthy looking mother plant.

2. We then wash the corms to remove soil debris that usually harbor soil pathogens.

3. The roots and outer layer ( that are usually infested with parasitic nematodes) are peeled off as yam is peeled till they become completely white.

4. Corms that contains beetle tunnels and discolored corms (which signify that they are diseased) are discarded.

5. The completely white corms are them immersed in a 15% gik solution to kill any remaining pest.

6. The corms are then air dried for 24 hours.

7. Thereafter they are placed in the sterilized environment of the propagators ( having about 100% humidity and 40 c) and multiply 30 folds

The best time agronomicaly to plant plantain is the beginning of the raining season. But it would be harvested during the dry season when plantain is supplus in the market.

The best time for profit is to plant at the middle of the raining season ( June, July and August), the plantains would be harvested when plantains are scare in the market.

Application of improve agrotechnology is the fastest way of boosting agro productivity.

According to FAO, at 1997 Nigeria plantain production was 1.7 million metric tons while that of Ghana was 1.8 million.

By 2013, Ghana plantain production increased astronomically to 3.5 million metric tons per annum, Nigeria's production increased to a meagre 2.7 million.

Ghana success is due to the embrace of improved production techniques such as the use of high yielding macropropagated suckers.

The banana plantlets were obtained through a rather more complicated process compared to the traditional way of growing banana using suckers – these are the daughters growing at the base of the mother plant that farmers uproot from their own farms or buy from a neighbor. It is a slow method of obtaining planting material and it easily spreads pests and diseases from one farm to another if the suckers are not properly selected and treated.

However this new technology, known as macro-propagation, aims at overcoming these two challenges – it allows the rapid production of pest-free planting material.
