STORAGE AS A SERVICE

Definition - What does Storage as a Service (SaaS) mean?

Storage as a service (SaaS) is a business model in which a company leases or rents its storage infrastructure to another company or individual to store data. Small companies and individuals often find this to be a convenient methodology for managing backups, and providing cost savings in personnel, hardware and physical space. A company providing SaaS may be called a storage service provider (SSP). Storage as a service can also be referred to as hosted storage.

As an other option to putting away attractive tapes offsite in a vault, IT overseers are meeting their capacity and reinforcement needs by signing Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with a SaaS supplier, more often than not on a cost-per-gigabyte-put away and cost-per-information exchanged premise. The customer exchanges the information implied for storage to the specialist organization on a set calendar over the SaaS supplier's wide area network or over the internet. The storage service provider gives the customer the storage space required to get to their stored information. Customers utilize the storage space to perform standard assignments related with capacity, including information exchanges and information reinforcements. Ruined or lost organization information can without much of a stretch be reestablished.

Storage as a service is prevalent among small to mid-sized businesses, as no underlying spending plan is required to set up hard drives, servers and IT staff. SaaS is likewise advertised as a brilliant method to moderate dangers in a debacle recuperation by giving long haul information stockpiling and upgrading business soundness.

CHECK WELL BEFORE YOU PAY

Why is a large and widespread network essential? When a user contacts a web server or data center, they may have to incur at least 100 milliseconds of latencies in fetching the data from the data center (not that it is located far). This lag is significant at an organizational level, where millions of bytes of data may be accessed every minute. This is especially relevant for live business applications deployed from these storage and backup systems which may need to be accessed from time to time. The repercussions of increased latency or lag in data extraction have a dollar impact i.e. loss of revenues since it results in downtime. Amazon, for instance, has observed that every 100 milliseconds of additional latency on its website results in a 1% drop in revenue.

The key to maximizing benefits from SaaS solutions is to tie up with vendors who replicate data at nearby accessible storage media through a geo-replicator. It essentially operates by exporting a unified view of the data across multiple data centers by associating with multiple cloud providers. The result is an integrated network that allows for effective storage and efficient retrieval.

BENEFITS OF SAAS

Affordability
Unlike traditional software, SaaS (like Workbooks CRM) is usually sold on a subscription basis that includes upgrades, maintenance and a degree of customer support. SaaS subscription models usually operate on a monthly subscription basis and hence there are no large up-front costs.

2. Fast Deployment

With SaaS solutions, all you need is a web browser and internet access, and you're ready to go. Whereas traditional software can take weeks or even months to deploy, SaaS solutions don't require any software to be installed and so you are able to access your new software immediately.

3. Zero Infrastructure

When delivering business applications via SaaS, the complexity of the underlying IT infrastructure is all handled by your SaaS vendor. Users do not need to worry about the maintenance of hardware, or which operating system version supports which database - your SaaS vendor will take care of all of this for you, so you don't have to.

4. Seamless Upgrades

Your SaaS provider will manage software updates and upgrades for you, eliminating the need to install or download patches. At any one time, you can be assured that you will always have the most up to date software.

5. Guaranteed Levels of Service

With most traditional software, you are not given a guarantee on how well it will perform, with SaaS you are. Some service providers for instance, guarantee your applications will be available 99.5% of the time. In the event they don't deliver, which rarely happens, there are penalties to be paid by them.

6. Automatic Backups and Data Recovery

If you are familiar with traditional software, you will know that unless a costly automated solution has been implemented, the process of backing up your data on a weekly basis can be laborious at the best of times. SaaS solutions eradicate this painstaking task, instigating automatic backups without user intervention and thus ensuring the integrity of your data.

7. Work Anywhere

Provided there is an internet connection, SaaS solutions can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Users are able to access their data and work more efficiently from anywhere, making life easier for home-workers or for those people that work across multiple sites.

8. Security

In many instances, an organisations' business information is more secure in a SaaS solution, than in traditional software. For instance, some office that run two geographically separate data centers which contact the I.T infrastructure to deliver applications. In the unfortunate event that a disaster occurs in one of the centers, the second data center can continue delivering the service.

9. High Adoption Rates

As SaaS solutions are delivered over the internet, there is virtually no learning curve involved with adopting a new solution as employees tend to already be used to working on the internet.
