There has been a bit of a shift in how video games get designed
across the last few years. No longer do we get boss battles, puzzle based mission designs or overly hard enemies. Instead, thanks to the industry being bigger than ever, there's an inherent need to placate the middle-man, the lowest common denominator. There's a fear that when so much money is being funnelled into any given product, the consumer just might not get their money's worth if they get roadblocked or impeded somewhere down the line.
To stick with a game in the face of such a front-loaded structure
means you're truly dedicated, and with dedication should come some sense of reward. After all, unlike an evening at the movies, the
average game will suck up more than 10 hours of your life, meaning
that if you do stick around, what's waiting at the end had better be
worth it.

Shadow of Colossus
Even before the jaw-dropping ending, the game rips your heart to pieces. The last hour of the game was emotional whiplash. It’s worth wrestling Shadow of the Colossus, perhaps one of the greatest video games ever made and the definitive argument for video games as "art," tells a seemingly simple story: as hero Wander, your mission is to kill the giant Colossi who roam the world - huge, ancient and seemingly evil beings - in order to bring your girlfriend, Mono, back from the dead.
The length of the game consists of Wander and his horse, Agro, tracking down each Colossi until they're all vanquished. At first, this task is fun and you relish the chance to murder these horrifying beasts. But after a while, you're unable to escape the feeling that something is wrong; maybe these beasts aren't so bad after all? And then it happens...
The ending of Shadow of the Colossus literally throws everything you've done for the entire length of the game right back at you, as it's revealed that Wander has been a mere pawn all this time - for his selfish actions (that is, murdering the Colossi for his own purposes) the hero of the game is punished; he's sucked into a vortex and is transformed into a baby.
At this point, Mono awakens.. and doesn't recognise him. It's a horribly bleak and sombre ending - one that begs the player to ask "What have I done?" as your perception of Wander changes dramatically. Could it be, after all, that he was really the villain the whole time?

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Hideo Kojima is a masterful storyteller, and his work in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is a prime example of his brilliance. After players make their way through the challenges of the game, they’re faced with a tough ending: they must kill their friend and mentor, The Boss, who was discovered to be a Soviet defector. In fact, players are forced to push the button that will pull the trigger, extinguishing The Boss’s life.
However, the real twist comes later, when players learn that The Boss wasn’t a Soviet defector, but had instead set up her own death in order to protect those she loved and the United States. The heartbreak in this ending is real

BioShock Infinite
Some people didn’t like the ending to Bioshock, but there’s no denying that it was a huge surprise. Throughout the game, the player is contacted by a man named “Atlas,” who asks him to perform various tasks, all preceded by the phrase “Would you kindly.” In the end, you discover the words are a programmed trigger in the mind of the protagonist – he was hypnotized, and this entire time was being manipulated to further an impostor’s agenda.
BioShock is easily one of the greatest games of all time, alongside one of the greatest endings in BioShock infinite. This series is truly one of a kind. As the story unfolds for the player, it retroactively makes the entire gameplay up to that point even better. There are a few major reveals as to who the player actually is, what relationships exist that you were unaware of, and what the entire game was all about.
It’s rare that the ending of a story has the effect of completely changing everything that came before it, but that’s exactly what happens in this game. Essentially, a game that has played out like a movie thanks the player by slamming them with a reveal that could only be followed by someone laying down a controller and saying “WTF” at their TV, followed by the inevitable scanning through YouTube to figure out what just happened.

Uncharted 4: Thief's End
This is a proper ending, isn’t it? Too many games these days end with one minute of dialogue neatly wrapping things up in a bow and then – bam! Credits. Not Nathan Drake’s swan song though, oh no. We get the full works here. Nobody dies sacrificing themselves for another in the finale; Sam and Sully wander off to be larcenous gentlemen of leisure together, and Drake gets to go and pull rubbish out of the river. Any other game would end there but Naughty Dog are not any other developer. After that, we get a whole playable epilogue; we get to meet Nathan and Elena’s daughter, see the parents grow old together, and most importantly, play Crash freaking Bandicoot! . You will weep tears, tears of joy.

Portal 2
Portal and Portal 2 are considered some of the most impressive, immersive games available in the industry. The storyline is something every gamer should experience, and the characters deliver a compelling performance unlike any other game.
Those who played the first Portal were understandably skeptical of GLaDOS, the computer in charge of the Aperture Labratories facility. However, it’s discovered over time that GLaDOS is on the players’ side, though there’s still the potential for betrayal. However, rather than a twist ending similar to Portal , the developers deliver something else, something more human, and the twists presented are enough to make any gamer replay Portal 2 immediately.

Grand Theft Auto V

Hear me out! Grand Theft Auto may seem to many people like simply a mindless murder and theft simulator. That’s expected. It would be a crime, however, to not acknowledge the masterpiece that is Grand Theft Auto V. The story. The soundtrack. The gameplay. The multiplayer. Everything about this game is perfection. Of course, we’re discussing the ending.
What makes it so special, you ask? The ending to GTA V can go one of three ways. Kill Michael, kill Trevor, or save everyone. The former two options are a true testament to just how horribly violent and nightmarish this game can be, with Trevor being set aflame and giving you a dull, sick feeling to your stomach, and Michael being plunged to his death from a high chimney walkway.
Both of these endings are highly regrettable once you realise what you’ve done, and are each of them a sad conclusion, albeit conclusions you’d find hard to forget. The final option though, is an impressive display of just what Rockstar can achieve with only a song and a nice view. After a few loose ends are tied, Michael, Trevor and Franklin are seen standing near the coast, with a beautiful sunset in the background as The Setup by Favoured Nation begins playing. It’s probably one of my personal favourite moments in gaming ever.

Call of Duty Infinit Warefare.
The moment you realize the only way to win the battle is to sacrifice your life for the greater good.
Battlefied 4 gives similar example of self sacrifice for the greater good when Hannah had to be left behind to manually detonate the explosives.
