QUEEN PALM

Also known as feather palm, queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffianum) is a lush, graceful palm with interesting gray bark and glossy fronds that reach more than 10 feet long. At maturity, queen palms reache heights of 30 to 40 feet. In warm weather, the tree produces waxy flowers, soon replaced by clusters of small, orange dates.

Water the queen palm deeply and slowly with a soaker hose or let a garden hose trickle at the base of the tree. Provide enough water to soak the soil to a depth of 2 to 3 feet, wetting the soil around the trunk to a width of about 5 feet. Repeat every other week throughout summer, decreasing to every four to six weeks in winter. Adjust as necessary to allow for rainfall. The queen palm is not drought-tolerant and needs regular watering.

Apply a fertilizer formulated specifically for palms in mid-spring and early summer at the rate suggested on the label. Scatter the fertilizer evenly on the soil under the canopy, and then water deeply. Palm fertilizer contains necessary amounts of nitrogen, as a lack of nitrogen causes the fronds to turn yellow or pale green. Palm fertilizer also contains potassium, which prevents yellowing of leaves in older plants.

Pull loose fronds and cut off those that are dead, damaged or diseased. Cut off fruit clusters that hang over sidewalks or walkways. Remove suckers or small palms that sprout at the base of the tree. Prune queen palm once or twice every year to improve the appearance of the tree. It's healthiest for the tree to leave all green fronds in place. Never cut off green fronds that point up or grow horizontally.

Spray the palm periodically with a garden hose to remove dust and prevent mites and other insects that hide in the fronds. Cleaning is especially important for palms growing near the ocean as it removes salt buildup on the leaves.
