Op, you are right to some extent. AK47 is mostly used due to its low cost of maintenance and cost of acquisition. It can be wielded by anyone. No need of formal training before someone can use AK47.

But that doesn't mean it is better than M16.

let me quickly remind you that the North Vietnamese soldiers who defeated the American Army during the Vietnam war were handling no other weapons than the Ak 47, and the American soldiers were welding your almighty M16. In 1993 during the battle of mogadishu the American soldiers with their M16 were subjected to a bitter resistance by Ak 47 wielding Somalis, it was so brutal and guess what they were humiliated.
