TIOTE; LEADER, LEGEND LIVES ON.
Dark misty clouds gathered on Monday the 5th of June over the world of the beautiful round leather game following news of the death of one of the few cherished players from the African Continent to have laced his booth for the game; Cheick Tiote. The dark young footballer of Ivorian origin died following a heart attack during a training session with his club; Chinese franchise. Following the news, the football world which was still reeling with celebrations from the history making European league championship cup win of Real Madrid over Juventus, was thrown into instant mourning with an outpouring of love from sports lovers, football clubs and footballers alike.
The former Newcastle United player spent seven years at the club and made over 150 appearances before moving to the Chinese Franchise in February for an undisclosed fee. While playing for his country Ivory Coast, he was capped 52 times. He began his professional career in Belgium with Anderlecht in 2005 before moving to Dutch side FC Twente, where he made 86 appearances and won the Eredivisie league title in the 2009-10 season under manager Steve McClaren. Tiote, a defensive midfielder, then signed for Newcastle in 2010 for £3.5m following his impressive run of form which attracted his new employers. Born in the Ivory Coast, Tiote was part of the Ivorian squad that won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. At Newcastle, his single 30 yard volley In February 2011 against Arsenal was all he needed to earn him the status of a cult hero at the club as Newcastle United came from 4-0 down to draw with Arsenal in the Premier League.
