Basil (Ocimum basilicum), also known as Saint Joseph's Wort or great basil, is an herb belonging to the mint family – Lamiaceae. It is often used as a seasoning in cooking. Basil is native to India and other tropical areas of Asia. It is best known as a culinary herb prominently featured in Italian cuisine (usually Sweet or Genovese basil).

Depending on the species and cultivar, the leaves may taste somewhat like anise, with a strong, pungent, often sweet smell. There are many varieties well as several related species called basil.
