Politicians Should Be Put On Minimum Wage Structure Too by nairaman66(m): 10:26am On Aug 04, 2017
So much brouhaha has been trailing the new minimum wage structure for workers as the Trade Union Congress has called on the federal government of Nigeria to negotiate a new minimum wage of N56,000 with labor as a result of massive devaluation of the Naira. Apparently, the massive devaluation of the Naira has caused so much untold hardship on millions of Nigerians presumably more than 70% of Nigerians are now living below the poverty line. It is not news that the middle class had been completely wiped out in the country as a result of the high level of inflation. These statistics are mind boggling, yet they are real and haunting.

According to TUC president, Dr. Bobboi Bala Kaigama, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria strongly condemns the call for the removal of National Minimum Wage from the Exclusive list to the Concurrent list by the House of Representatives, in a bill being sponsored by one of its members. The Congress sees this in bad light and as an attempt to alter the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from the back door.” He went further to say "For the umpteenth time, it needs be emphasized that labor rather than politicians have held this country together even from colonial days. Any attempt to openly or surreptitiously undermine the Nigerian workers or labor movement shall be resisted with all arsenals within our control"

From the above, it is true that politicians have a tradition of taking advantage of the Nation's annual fiscal plans to loot the national treasury for their selfish gains. As it is now, there is urgent need for serious restructuring and overhauling of the whole system. We need policies, designed to permanently put the economy on a path of sustainable growth, in order to achieve this and cushion the effect of the unprecedented inflation on the Nigerian populace, The National Assembly/The Senate should be fitted into the Minimum wage structure. If this is achievable, corrupt practices by these dare devil politicians would be almost completely wiped out, because less money in government means less corruption, with this, the country would get back on its feet and government will be able to cater for its plethora of responsibilities.
