Restructuring: Southern Nigerians To Boycott 2019 Polls by omoharry(f): 1:21pm On Aug 09, 2017
The strong agitation for restructuring Nigeria gets messier with threats that if it is not allowed, people from southern region of the country may call the bluff of the 2019 general elections.

Southern part of the country comprises the south west, south east and south/south states.
But with growing momentum of the call for true federalism, strong indications are that, with sympathy from minority ethnic states in the northern region, the next general polls could be a hoax.

Top leaders from various parts of the country with the former vice president Atiku Abubakar sounding loud have cautioned that restructuring of the country was the best part to thread now as well as the veritable antidote to even and sustainable development.
They are also of the view that anything contrary may result to failure of once a united country.

Recall that in restating advocacy for restructuring the federation, former vice -president and a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar had argued, that states that were not financially viable should be collapsed into those that were viable.
“There is no doubt that many of our states are not viable, and were not viable from the start once you take away the federation allocations from Abuja. We have to find creative ways to make them viable in a changed federal system.” said Atiku

According to the former vice-president, the restructuring, involves changes to the allocation of powers, responsibilities and resources among the states or zones and between them and the federal government.
“We can constitute a body of non-partisan experts to suggest other ideas. But in all, we must devolve more powers and resources from the federal government and de-emphasize federal allocations as the source of sustenance of states. We need to start producing again and collecting taxes to run our governments in a more sustainable way with greater transparency and accountability” he said.

Joined in the fray for restructuring Nigeria, is a close ally of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and second republic senator, Chief Ayo Adebanjowho spoke at a recent conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra, warning that the country may collapse unless it is restructured.

Pa Adebanjo who maintained that if Nigeria was not restructure now will collapse, explained further that those opposed to the call were the real enemies of the country.
He stated that it was the military which broke into Nigeria politics and governance that caused the problems of the country.

“If Nigeria is not restructured now, it will collapse”
“Our problem remains the military, “The military did not allow us to settle our problems” he said, pointing that the pockets of self agitation and determination, for instance like Biafra, were not about separation but about living together on agreed terms.
Described as the rave of the moment, regional blocks and pressure-self determination groups have began to prop a national conversation on self economic, financial and quasi political independence.

This development according to sources close to the southern people’s assembly is the cardinal objective of the assembly.
Insiders close to the group told theNigerian Pilot weekend that there are strong plots to begin a nationwide enlightenment to drum support from southern Nigerian electorates to shun the forthcoming general elections in 2019.

It was learnt that the grand plan is to ask the electorates not to partake in the electoral process, so as to discredit it.
The position will be canvassed vigorously at the next meeting of the assembly scheduled to hold soon in one of the south eastern states.
A coronary to this development is corroborated by recent remarks credited to a south east leader and former governor of Anambra state, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, who has also called for immediate restructuring of the country.

Dr Ezeife who called for restructuring into the six-geopolitical zones, explained that the country should go into referendum to decide if the nation will continue to remain as one or break up.
He also stated that the Southern Peoples Assembly, SPA, will soon meet to take a stand on whether the people of southern Nigeria will be part of 2019 general elections if the country was not restructured.

“The Southern Peoples Assembly, SPA, will soon meet to take a stand on whether the people of southern Nigeria will be part of 2019 general elections if the country was not restructured”, he further said.

So guys, would you boycott the 2019 vote if we are asked to for the sake of restructuring?

i don't take nigerians serious, on any serious issue, especially southern nigeria. i 'll only take them serious when i see political unity among the southern part of the country. the day the south unites, the seemingly northern political stronghold 'll be broken. until then we can continue to make noise, & endure injustice & inequality of the status quo.

Much as I love this move, I sincerely hope and pray the Southwest will not betray the rest of us.
Hey, I am not a tribal hater. In fact I love the Yoruba's as much as I love my own tribe, except for that problem of insincerity. They tend to be more contented being arewa defenders.

I would have also want the middle belt to join this move.

Why are you all crying out loud for goodness sake . The Yoruba has always been in the forefront and demanding that the country be restructured for long .true federalism is the only way the country can move forward.Referring to the Yoruba as a Coward will not help your agitation for Biafra. You need the Yoruba more than you hate them.

Afenifere was founded by legendery Chief Obafemi Awolowlo but this Yoruba social-political platform had been bastardised by the duo of Chief Ayo Adebanjo and Odumakin. Afenifere as presently constituted serves the interest of this duo and not the common interest of Yoruba people. So boycott of 2019 election is not in the political agenda of the South West.
