Monodora myristica (West African Calabash nutmeg) is a perennial edible plant of the family Annonaceae. It is found most and commonly in the evergreen forests of West Africa. Its common names are African nutmeg, calabash nutmeg, and in Nigeria, it is called Ehuru by the Idi Igbo’s, Ariwo by the Yoruba’s and Gudan Miya by the Hausa’s. Its seed has an aromatic/fragrance and taste that is similar to nutmeg and is used as a popular spice in the West African cuisines. When grounded to powder, the kernel is used to prepare soup as stimulant to relieve constipation and control passive uterine haemorrhage in women immediately after child birth, Stomach ache, fever pains and eye diseases. While in some West African Countries, it is used in the treatment of headache and hypertension.
This wonderful spice work well with other spices and is very rich in taste and aroma in stews, baked goods, meats, fish and in pepper soup preparation. Recently, most users prefer buying the de-husked seeds because the shelled seeds are difficult to de-husked. We advise you buy the seeds with shells because, while using it, you get the freshness and its wonderful, rich aroma!
How do you de-husk the seeds to retrieve its brown aromatic seeds? All You need to do is to simply get a plier; select the number of seeds you want to use and crack the shell open! Please remember, do not use your teethes because it is not healthy! Samples are available for tasting.
