Nigeria head coach Sam Vincent has picked his 12-player squad for this week’s FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2017 in Bamako, Mali from August 17-28. Three Nigerian-based players, and nine foreign-based players made the squad.

The cut has seen 17 players out of the team from the initial 29-player provisional list.

The Nigerians who finished third place in Cameroon are currently aiming to make a big difference in Mali, and are placed in group B of the competition. The squad includes:

Aisha Mohammed (University of Virginia), Evelyn Akhator (Dallas Wings), Ezinne Kalu (Savannah State University), Sarah Ogoke (RC Celta Vigo, Spain), Adaora Elonu (Perfumeria Avenida, Spain), Chioma Udeaja (First Bank Basketball club), Nkechi Akashili (First Bank Basketball club), Upe Atosu (First Bank Basketball club), Ndidi Madu (University of Florida), Cecelia Okoye (McNeese State University), Ugo Nwaigwe (Temple University, Wanger College) and Nyingifa Atonye Jennifer (Elitzur Holon, Isreal).

Here are D'Tigress's group fixtures:

August 18: Nigeria v Mozambique at 10:15pm
August 19: v DR Congo at 5:15pm
August 20: v Egypt at 10:30am
August 22: Guinea v Nigeria at 12:45pm
August 23: Senegal v Nigeria at 9:45pm

The Senegal match will arguably be the hardest for D'Tigress as the Senegalese ladies are the defending Women's Afrobasket champions.

Meanwhile, group A comprises hosts, Mali, Cote d' Ivoire, Central African Republic, Tunisia, Angola, Cameroon.

Senegal 81-22 Guinea

The Guineans only scored 5 points in the 3rd quarter. That's how good defending champions, Senegal, have been.

I don't know of any station broadcasting the games (maybe Supersport). But I watched the game on fiba's livestream site which requires a subscription, and isn't available in Africa.

I think it will be on a Startimes channel.

As always, it is not the best squad we can put out, but we are good enough to comfortably win the tournament with this squad.

If we can sort out admin and financing, we are a top 3-5 side in the world and should contend for a medal at every global tournament.

The Ogwumike sisters alone can do that. At least 3 of our girls were drafted in the WNBA this year. One of them was meant to come & join up with the squad, but I don't know if she did.

Glad the Mfon Udoka is back in the mix. She played in the WNBA and was captain of Nigeria for over a decade. All the girls look up to her.

Also, the run of the very young 1st Deepwater team in this year's league shows that there is something good happening on the home front as well.

Good luck ladies.

Men, if the Ogwumike sisters played for Naija, D'Tigress would be completely untouchable on Africa. The team could even have a decent shot at the World Cup semifinals. But I guess the NBBF weren't fast enough to reach out to them.

However, D'Tigress are number 1 in FIBA Africa's power rankings, and are considered to have the best squad at this tournamentZ

Impressive win by our girls. All 12 of them scored and we were good on defense limiting DRC to single digits in 3 quarters.

Nigeria vs Egypt in the 3rd Quarter.

Nigeria leading 61 - 40. Making a statement against one of the top teams.

Just found out that Osaretin Akhator, one of the girls drafted in the WNBA came for the tournament.

I think we will win this tournament with room to spare, although we cannot be overconfident.
