A three-storeyed building collapsed on Tuesday on Saka Okoro Street, Ilufe Road, Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos State.

However, no life was lost or injury sustained in the incident, as most of the tenants were reported to have vacated it after they were served demolition notices.

The landlord, who was the only occupant, had stepped out of the building minutes before it collapsed.


The incident, which happened around 7am, reportedly created panic in the neighbourhood as residents fled in different directions.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and National Emergency Management Agency were said to have responded to distress calls over the collapse.

The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr. Adeshina Tiamiyu, said the building, which consisted of eight blocks of flats, had shown signs of distress.

He noted that it was a partial collapse.

He said, “Investigation conducted at the scene of the incident revealed that the building had shown some signs of distress. No life was lost and no injury sustained. Recovery operation is ongoing by LASEMA, Lagos State Building Control Agency and other stakeholders, to prevent any secondary incident of full or total collapse that may lead to unnecessary loss of lives.”

Our correspondent learnt that the building had been sealed off by the government, as some ex-tenants lamented that their property were still in the building.
