This attempt at emotional blackmail is pathetic. Dangote asked for land to build his factory. Kano state govt gave him land. Dangote's business plan includes providing inputs for farmers to provide the required tonnes of tomatoes. Kano state govt gave the farmers extra land with irrigation. Dangote has built his plant. What is stopping production? Simple. Dangote asked govt to stop importation of tomato paste without producing a SINGLE tin. He wants a monopoly. When govt didn't answer him, he shut down the plant. Suddenly, all his outgrowers had to find alternative markets. Luckily, they did. He did it during Yaradua. Yaradua begged him, as a muslim, d price of cement in the international market, after clearing to Nigeria is like N600. Please sell at N1000. Dangote refused. Yaradua unilaterally reduced cement price to N1000. Dangote halted production in all his plants. Price of cement balooned to close to 3k. Yaradua had to back down. Next round is his refinery. Thats where he will hold us to fresh ransom. His business model is MONOPOLY. Take that away, he's a fish out of water and is ready to do anything, including cripple our economy, to maintain the status quo.

I am.not sure how valid your points are. It's normal for any serious government to protect local production rather than those importing the same product. The way it work is that an import tariff or duty is charged on the imported product so that the local producers can compete. You do not open your local market to a flood of imported products without thinking of ways to protect local manufacturers. Do we even know what Chinese producers of tomato paste add to their product to make it look reddish. If it is lycopenre that someone referred to, I believe Dangote has the resources to get it cheaply. It may not be immediately available locally but he has money to get things going. For example, does Dangote companies do R&grin to find new ways to improve their products...surely not. He is still not doing what serious businesses in advanced part of the world does. He is relying too much on government rather than find new ways to beat his competitors. He can afford millions of $$ to source lycopene locally if that is his challenge. He can build labs and get the best scientist to do that for him. But the Nigerian in him want the easier way out. It's not sustainable. R&grin holds the key. That's how newer product processing alternatives are discovered to get new products. That's what's called advancement.

post nigeria era practiced the ideal federalism like it is practiced in america. Each state generate revenue and only pay tax to the center.
Most regions finance themselves through taxing their citizens who are mostly farmers in the post independent era. and we aren't even talking of advanced mechanized farming or irrigation practice.
It's those taxes the western region funded free education, built first university in nigeria, highest skyscraper in africa, first tv station amongst others.
so if the free oil money is stopped and we revert back to each region generating money through mechanized agriculture, we would be better off. We don't have to depend on fluctuating crude oil price.
It doesn't prevent states attracting companies to invest and tax them. We had many foreign companies back then too.

Why not have a foundation (like California State does) before making the move?

eastern region recieves over 600 Billion Nairas budgetary allocation from the F.Govt .. Why not convert most of that in to production first to proove what "Biafra" can do when independent?

its very simply: IPOB should show us what Biafra can do with resources before creating "another Nigeria" in History.

And listen; when the igbos do seek independence, that NAME BIAFRA should not be used. Check history books, the eastern region had a Name before NIGERIA was forced on them

I disagreed with you. There is no any local competition right now in the paste business. This in itself is a monopoly for any industry in operation. Last year, the company in Lagos sent salesmen on the streets to sell their items. The one I saw was a repackaged imported paste the salesman was explaining the hardship faced to produce locally. It was this report that made me to know the company finally collapsed.

I suspect Golden Penny Foods (not confirmed) acquired the noodle industry & Golden Penny Noodle is doing well being already rooted in feeds (human & animals) I think the failure of noodles business is a fundamental operational issue.

You spend a full year growing a big hectre of land, but on selling everything you cant even last for 2 months with the proceeds.

A company spends 1 yr manufacturing and selling phones, shoes, modern wears, cars, weapons, etc and smiles to the bank while paying salaries to employ others.

If we keep importing all the heavy duty vehicles we use in planting, and we hv no resources to fix them, we find out that the cost we expend on capital takes lots of yrs to cover.. But if we were to produve this heavy duty vehicles... Then the stres that the importation of same, puts on the naira will be reduced, and it will be far more affordable to farmers thereby y reducing their overhead cost and at the same time increasing their profits

This is the same idea I'm pondering on. We, Nigerians, need to produce our heavy duty machines. We should produce tractors, caterpillars, factory machines, and even common street sweeper machines, etc... Our engineers are letting us down! There is also an issue of reviving and building our steel industries because we need steel to produce heavy duty machinery. We need to bring together our mechanical and electrical engineers to build these machines! This is a shout out to all Nigerian engineers as well as investors. You have an important part to play in our economy!

my guy i think you misunderstood what he said. He meant there has to be technological advancement for agriculture to have the positive impact we want on the economy.

If you have 20 tonnes of cocoa, bring. If you have 500 broilers, bring. This will encourage people to farm and not be scared of what to do with their harvest. There was a time a lot of people went into fish farming but most lest because they end up begging market women to buy. If I know a processing plant where I can get a fair deal, I will farm and at the right time I will take my harvest there and collect my money. Even if the profit is small, I will manage it.

Why must they take it to government. Can't Nigerians set up Private Business to buy and trade this?

You probably don't understand how it works but let me summarize it. Every responsible government has food reserves. If there is surplus, they buy up the excess so that prices won't crash. If there is scarcity they open up the reserves and sell to prevent prices going too high. Please read about government food reserves and please don't be quick to blame people that post on public forums without first trying to properly consider what they have posted.

In Western Nigeria, Govt Used to buy produce off farmers who deposit the produce with merchants, the govt fight for the best price in the intl market and then use a formula to determine how much the farmer gets and they announce price over the radio.

The issue of multiple taxation is one that should be tackled to encourage investors. so far the state would be taxed by the center, a percentage of the total revenue generated including from taxing the companies in the state would be remitted the center.
There is no country where the people aren't corrupt. contrary to popular belief, a white man would steal and collect bribe if assured of getting away with it. They only have a system that works based on them having same language, same religion and basically most things in common.
Africa has been set up not to develop due to our multiple tribes, add imported religion into the mix. now people make statement, vote and take actions along tribal or religious line.
an ibo man or yoruba man prefers to vote his kinsman into position irrespective if he is qualified or have credible antecedent or not.
so how do you expect to have the best brains in government at any time.
Italy is a nation of Italians with similar denomination Org christians, Spanish nation also, french nation, Danish, Polish, Germans, just check out these advanced countries, they are a group of people with things in common.
The relative success of the post independent nigeria was because a yoruba man, an ibo man and hausa were in charge of their region. The people only had to elect amongst themselves, there was no sentiment based on tribe, so the best candidate won then and they perform.
practicing true federalism would take us back to system or at least close to it.

Do you even remember how he entered the Noodles market? He sponsored a false rumor in 2005 that people were dying after eating Indomie Noodles. Shortly after, he introduced his products.

This is the same nonsense he did when he introduced his 3X cement. Lafarge complained bitterly about this.

Its just not Dangote suffering from the unattractive business environment in Nigeria , there are many who have delved into the agricultural sector hoping to invest and bring jobs to Nigeria as well as turning a profit. Having been in operation for over 5 years jessam Cattle Ranch & Farms has found that adding value to the production value chain has been so challenging in Nigeria, As the CP has said the higher up the chain you go the greater the economic value of the farm product or the component of the farm produce. The problem is that in order to go up the value chain you need key infrastructure. jessam and most other mechanized farms have found that lack of consistent electricity in particular in the farm has made it impossible for us to preserve our farm produce, be it butchered animals or fresh vegetables, without electricity we cannot add value to our products. We would love to slaughter 100 pigs a day, keep them refrigerated and ready to be processed to sausages, bacon, ham, meat pies etc how do we do this without out constant electricity.Even the finished product has to be stored for a couple of weeks in refrigerated store rooms before it gets to the consumer. Dangote tomato paste factory most likely could not get enough raw materials at a realistic price to make it work

Bad roads - Without good roads it is literally impossible to embark on processing our produce on a large scale, we need good motorable roads to move livestock and produce from farm to factory, from factory to warehouses over the nation, from warehouse to shops and markets. Unfortunately the roads are so bad and the cost of transportation and damage to vehicles, extended journey times simply erode any gains in moving up the value chain. This is one of the reasons importation of finished goods is more attractive than going the nigerian farm to market route. The importer benefits from the good roads in say Europe to the ship from ship to the port and into Lagos to market so much cheaper and easier.

Security - need I SAY MORE...we all the challenges facing farmers from theft on the actual farms, theft on the highways, thugs extorting lorries on the highways of Nigeria, stealing in factories etc

Nigeria workers mentality - I am sorry to say that many given a job higher up the value chin often see it as a blessing to enrich themselves at the expense of the continued success of the company

add in government policies such as lack of supporting policies to grow the sectors higher up the chain then you realize the reasons why it is so challenging for most mechanised farms to add value on a large scale basis

jessam cattle ranch & farms aims to be a major player in the meat industry and help stop the importation of cheap, rotten, chemical induced meat from being dumped in Nigeria, often slowly ruining our health .

Slow and steady jessam will grow to be a strong brand in food industry. We are based in Enugu. The business environment is so challenging that we are postponing in further investments and scaling back. The government keeps yelling about the agriculture sector but doing nothing to make this sector attractive.

I don't know why Bloomberg didn't see this while designing the plant for Dangote. I did a similar design in 2015 and this was my finding: taking a production capacity of 360,000 tons of tomato paste annually as a basis. Material balance revealed that 2,477,100 tons of raw tomato is required. (Raw tomato is 7 degree Brix while tomato paste is 30 degree Brix). Market survey revealed that a ton of raw tomato in the local market was 350 dollars while a ton of tomato paste was 1,300 dollars. Ignoring every other costs, annual cost of raw material for the plant was 866,974,500 dollars whereas annual income from sales of tomato paste was 702,000,000 dollars. I concluded and reported that the plant was technically sound but lacked economic viability. My recommendations were: 1. Government should intervene and subsidize the production cost of tomato for farmers who would sell the raw material to processors at subsidized rate. 2. The plant should consider producing other products like lycopene from the waste. 3. The plant should employ pinch technology to recover heat from the three effect evaporator for use in other units like sterilization and preheating.

Nice to know we have very well informed people here, Nairaland seems to attract the opposite.
