On the 30th of May, 1967, Biafra Republic was born. The three years that followed is the bloodiest period in Nigerian history and the period after that led to the incredible amount of mistrust and political volatility that has culminated in this present Fourth Republic.

However, 50 years on and the clamor for separation still seems as loud as ever, what has gone wrong? Nigeria, they say, is an immiscible cauldron of oil and water. Apparently, we must separated from each so that we can flourish individually. I find this to be an incredibly stupid idea. That we CANNOT live together? Our differences are so irreconcilable?

On first viewing, it appears that Biafra was fought for the right to secede but this is not necessarily the case. Biafra was fought for fairness and good governance, both of which Nigeria lacked in 1967. The Aburi accord sought to give the states the federalism we currently hail as the solution to our malaise but was soundly rejected by the North (even though they proposed very much the same thing in 1953 but ostensibly because of the oil that resided in the eastern region).

Who ever wrote this has a few loose screws on his head. Biafra isnt secession? It is about finding good governance and equity in Nigeria? Some people dont seem to understand thst Nigeria is not capable of providing neither good governance or equity. The people are just too divided for that to be possible. Trying to get the Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa-Fulani people to unite is like trying mix water, Oil and gel. You can mix all you want but leave it for the mixture for a second a second it will separate into its contituent parts. We have different value systems, different outlook on life, different norms and different perceptions. The only tning that brings us together is football and that is not enough to make a nation. We have tried for 57 years, killed each other in the millions in a civil war and yet, we are more divided than ever.

A time comes when people have to admit that a partnership isnt working and is only detrimental to everyone. Just because Lugard brought us all together doesnt mean that our unity was destined to work. It has never worked. Nigeria is but a mere 1914 colonial arrangement. So it is only right for those who have weighed the situation and come to the conclusion that they can do better on their own, should be granted independence.

Biafra is about secession and a fresh start.

Biafra is a nationality that is African and not a European construct that tells you and the world that you are a Nigger
